Jesse Clegg rocks out at Kirstenbosch
The show began with Jesse's friend Kerryn Rogers performing three numbers. She began with a beautiful version of “Summer Time”, very appropriate, followed by two of her own numbers.
Then it was time for Jesse and his band, who I had not seen live before. The music and performance was energetic. The band played, performed and moved as a tight unit, which I enjoyed, with several interesting riffs and solos. Jesse's lyrics are personal and come from the heart. Unfortunately in this live outdoor venue it was not always that easy to hear what he was singing.
While I enjoyed the show, I think Jesse and his band still have room to grow. Personally I found their overall sound a bit repetitive and would like to see more variety of style. While the grounds were full, the audience was sitting down listening, rather than getting up to dance and participate. Perhaps with more time and a longer set, they could have got the audience more enthused? As usual the show was over too soon, due to the usual “curfew”.
Instead of rushing off after the show, we chose to avoid the mass exodus, by chilling out on the lawns to enjoy the warm evening. There were plenty of families and children hanging around to play, and at one point a boundary rope got lifted for a mass tug of war. This Summer Concert had a “kiddie's corner” where the children could go enjoy face painting and other games.
Next week you can see the Jonny Cooper Orchestra on the 13 December. Click here to stand a chance to win tickets.
