FCB Jhb takes Press Grand Prix at Cannes

21 Jun 2006 13:3519 commentsBizLike
FCB Johannesburg took the only Press Grand Prix awarded last night, Wednesday 21 June, at Cannes for its Lego 'Periscope' campaign. The achievement has been lauded by Creative Circle chair, Alistair King of KingJames, as "truly extraordinary" and a wonderful achievement for South African advertising.

Lowe Bull South Africa took home a Silver Press Lion and a Bronze Press Lion each went to Lowe Bull South Africa, TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris, Ogilvy South Africa, FoxP2 and Grey Worldwide South Africa. Full details are available at www.canneslions.com/winners_site.

"Last night at the Lions Festival in Cannes, FCB South Africa was awarded the Grand Prix for Press for their client Lego. Needless to say, it is a first for South Africa and the positive impact it has on our status as a creative force in world advertising cannot be understated. I think it's fair to say that it is our industry's greatest creative achievement to date and for that we all congratulate FCB wholeheartedly.

"I am sadly one of the few poor sods not at Cannes this year and I am told the spirit in the South African camp there is huge. In addition to FCB's big win, South African agencies have won a mass of Gold medals across almost every category and the question being asked on the streets of Cannes is, 'What's going down in South African Advertising?'"

King added that South Africans have a tendency to underrate themselves as an industry and hopefully now that will change. "Congratulations should also go to Lobedu Leo Burnett, TBWA Hunt Lascaris, Ogilvy and Lowe Bull for their Gold wins which have also helped to put our industry in the Cannes spotlight. With TV still to come, it is already our best performance year ever. Let's hold thumbs for more.

"FCB, may you drink expensive champagne tonight and burp like successful people...Onwards and upwards!" proclaimed King.

Cyber Lions

South Africa did not feature in the Cyber Lions.

'Still Free' from droga5 New York for Ecko/Marc Ecko Enterprises received one of the Cyber Lions Grand Prix and another went to 'GTI Campaign' for Volkswagen for Crispin Porter + Bogusky Miami.

75 Lions were awarded in Press and 87 in the Cyber Lions competition with the Interactive Agency of the Year going to Crispin Porter + Bogusky Miami.

Credit for ad should go to Bester Burke (JHB)-
For the record, this Lego 'Submarine' ad was cracked at Bester Burke (JHB) a few years ago by Lance and a freelance copywriter. Posted on 26 Jun 2006 10:10

I don't really understand it? -
Forgive me for being a bit stupid, but what does the ad mean? What is it trying to say? I mean, i kind of understand the whole "imagine what you can do with lego" thing, and the "With lego, the possibilities are endless" idea. But I'm not sure, you know. Okay, it's a periscope. And? It's lego. And? Water. And? What, exactly, is the ad telling me about lego? Hey?

I'm not trying to be difficult, i just want to know? Posted on 22 Jun 2006 15:12
Ouch!-
My 4 year old daughter gets it. Go get an imagination. Posted on 22 Jun 2006 16:10
so?-
wow.. super.. does your 4-year-old get the correct message? Posted on 22 Jun 2006 17:18
G.
I like the fact that it's a little vague-
I think it's cool that there are different interpretations. Cannes has a history of choosing ads that are a bit open-ended - like the Playstation "Birth" ad. Posted on 22 Jun 2006 18:04
Who Cares?-
The fact that a 4 year old gets the ad, and you dont just shows your lack of grey matter. Cheap shot dude. Posted on 26 Jun 2006 09:35

Well done FCB-
Nice one FCB. Personally I don't think this ad should have received the Grand Prix but that's my opinion. Posted on 27 Jun 2006 07:59

FCB...is for Fantastic..Cool and Brilliant-
Well...respect to the FCB guys...you have done us proud. It seems to me that SA is on a hostile takeover mission at this year's cannes Awards.Getting international kick ass spotlight is rare in this industry.I guess we would not know FCB if it did not win the Grand Prix Award...but hell yeah....we now know.Lets get more of them next year. This inspires all of us....the Ad Industry Heads.

Nuff Said. Posted on 22 Jun 2006 17:04
