Clover ads are not just ads

12 Jul 2010 11:5118 commentsBizLike
It doesn't matter which brand you buy, milk is just milk, right?
Wrong.

Clover Milk is definitely not just milk. From making use of only the top 360 farms in South Africa to performing 55 quality checks on every litre of their milk, Clover prides itself on putting the utmost care into every single step of the process - from farm to factory to the man on the street.

Underpinned by their overall brand proposition, "a taste for healthy living", Clover's dedication to excellence stems from the belief that quality products add quality to life, and that quality milk is essential in the development of strong, healthy bones and teeth.

It is based on this proposition that creative agency Joe Public created an innovative print ad that delivers on the promise of the brand.

Says Antoinette Fourie, copywriter for Joe Public: "In a time of fast food and fizzy drinks, we wanted to create an ad that would break through the clutter to remind consumers of the wonderful health benefits of a quality milk such as Clover."

Of a tactical nature, the ad was designed to not only create talkability around Clover Milk, but also to communicate that milk is the number one source of calcium for healthy bones. Simply stating: "Clover Milk - the backbone of healthy living", the ad was run on the spine of Longevity magazine. And since Longevity's positioning is "the power of healthy living", there couldn't have been a more appropriate place for this execution.

Laurent Marty, Joe Public's strategic director, adds: "It's amazing how new, uncharted media spaces (those spaces that you are so accustomed to that you have become blind to them) can be discovered via the 'idea'. The concept of the "spine" in this instance opens a new media space, communicating an idea in a simple, yet unique way."

Uncharted media space!?-
Guys, guys, guys... the spines of books and magazines have been used plenty of times for advertising. Nice ad? Mmm, maybe. Uncharted space? Definitely not. Unique? Forget it. Posted on 12 Jul 2010 12:37

Creativity - the backbone of advertising.-
Hey ADrian. So when I saw this idea, I thought: No way, must have been done before. But I still loved it enough to Google it to death. Our strat department did quite a thorough web search too - and couldn't find one example of anything like it. So we sold it to our client. They loved it too. First time ever that any of the magazines in SA that we approached had a similar request. Longevity loved it enough to sell us the space - it is the magazine's master head after all. Almost paid the same for the space as a full-page ad. Hence the press release. So in the spirit of keeping things original, if you are so adamant that this idea has been done to death, please post examples or email them directly to me - pepe@joepublic.co.za I'm always open to criticism, as long as it is backed by sound evidence. mag spines cont-
ADrian, in response to your suggestion of checking out the 'chiropractor' & Sony ads, I had a look for the Sony one & the only one I could find was where they placed 2 ads INSIDE the magazine - the 1st headline saying : “Sony launches the world's thinnest LCD. How thin? Hold this page and turn to page 380”. The second ad headline then said : “Did you hold all of the pages together starting from page 141 up to this page? Now you know how thin our LCD is - only 0.99 cm”. If this is the one you were referring to, that wasn't using the spine?? I can't find the 'chiropractor' ad though ... At the end of the day, it's a great, effortless piece of communication, using one of the most common mediums around, in an innovative, fresh way. Posted on 13 Jul 2010 13:56

Any of the magazines in SA?-
What about international magazines? Posted on 13 Jul 2010 12:26

Good use of media, but yes, it's an ad-
No matter what the headline says - it's an ad. And I have an uncomfortable feeling it's too clever by half. Doted on by the creators, but ignored by everyone else.
Can't imagine anybody going: "Oh my, milk is good for my bones! Forgot all about that."
Beats the ridiculous, expensive milk by LaChapelle nonsense though. Posted on 13 Jul 2010 08:13

Nice ad.-
Like the ad. Posted on 13 Jul 2010 12:21

Love it!-
Thesiger has a good point - especially when it comes to the LaChapelle stuff. As for the ad, I think if people do notice it and engage with it, they would like the fact that it really is quite different. And hey, it's getting quite a bit of press - I saw a write-up on it in the paper the other day. So it should say something if an ad generates PR. Posted on 13 Jul 2010 14:18
