Multi-billion rand project to replace SA's trains gathers steam
According to the Cape Times, the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) said during a presentation to Parliament that a planned major revamp of Cape Town's rail system will include the modernisation of the national rail system and the replacement of all trains and the construction of new depots and stations. GNT subcontracts its fleet maintenance to Scania
Great North Transport (GNT) services transports 58 million passengers every year, using 297 routes, from 11 depots across South Africa, and clocking a total of 66 million kilometres. According to a Marketwire.comreport, Philippe Buyst, GNT's acting chief executive officer, the company makes sure that its fleet of 541 buses is not older then 10 years. Public transport smartcard launched in eThekwini Municipality
A public transport smartcard (the "Muvo" card), which is a large-scale cashless transit tariff system for the payment of bus fares, has been launched by the Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo. The smartcard system will be rolled out to commuters early in 2012. Read more >>
