FedEx Trade Networks, the freight forwarding arm of global shipping giant FedEx Corp, has announced that it has established operations in Johannesburg. As part of the company's global expansion initiative, which began in 2008, it has opened a total of 45 offices throughout Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. 
Engineering News reports that Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba planned to have a series of engagements with rail customers, as well as with the banks, pension funds and Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) to discuss ways of releasing additional resources for infrastructure developments. 
Great North Transport (GNT) services transports 58 million passengers every year, using 297 routes, from 11 depots across South Africa, and clocking a total of 66 million kilometres. According to a Marketwire.comreport, Philippe Buyst, GNT's acting chief executive officer, the company makes sure that its fleet of 541 buses is not older then 10 years. "Our fleet's average age at present is five years," he told Marketwire.com. 
A public transport smartcard (the "Muvo" card), which is a large-scale cashless transit tariff system for the payment of bus fares, has been launched by the Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo. The smartcard system will be rolled out to commuters early in 2012.
