New 'big cheese'

There is a new force on the SA retailing block with the launch of the South African Retail Council, a body of the Consumer Goods Council, last week. It will be called upon to deal with non-competitive issues directly affecting the retail sector, specifically economic & legislative affairs and labour relations.

Meanwhile, back at the farm, the Danisco Qualité Awards dinner took place on Thursday, awarding the crème de la crème of the local dairy industry. A small cheesery turned out to be the big cheese of the evening when its goat milk creation scored an overall first place in the SA Dairy Championships. A number of the other award-winning cheeses will be on offer at the SA Cheese Festival, currently taking place at Bien Donné, near Cape Town. Organisers have also offered free entry to the festival to any travellers still stranded in the Mother City due to the Icelandic volcano.

Happy Freedom Day tomorrow everyone!

Relaxe and renew at the Life Day Spa   RETAIL
[Ruth Cooper] Never having experienced a floatation tank or pool, but hearing great things about them as the ultimate relaxation activity, I was quite excited to get the chance to try one at the very swish Life Day Spa at Crystal Towers Hotel in Canal Walk. Luckily not only did I manage to get my float on, but I also tried out the Middle Eastern Mud Ritual.

The Grand Affair   RETAIL
[Riccardo Spagni] I recently was told that I like nice stuff. Apparently this is a problem if I ever go to live in a third-world village in a country like, I don't know, South Africa. Whilst both of these points may be true, there is no doubt that The Grand is on my list of "nice stuff" that I like. It is like the bachelor pad of some recently divorced Russian billionaire; it manages to ooze class and substance whilst still feeling surprisingly modern. This, however, is The Grand at night. During the day it transforms into our proverbial billionaire's hip-and-happening son, a watering hole for Cape Town's up-and-coming trendsetters. How is this possible, one might wonder? Location, location, location. Set in a formerly abandoned warehouse near the V&A Waterfront, it is effectively a private beach with the innards of the warehouse gutted and refurbished for the sole purpose of serving you food.
