Jabulani! Celebrating ten years of freedom through the airwaves

In 1990 the famous "Jabulani! Freedom of the Airwaves" conference was held in Holland. It was the start of democratizing the airwaves and the birth of community radio. This is the year that we celebrate 10 years of democracy and we invite the community radio sector to raise its voice and tell its stories.

This is a chance for all community radio stations to tell the success stories of their communities!

This is also chance to win a R5 000, R3 000 or R1000 prize for your station!

ABC Ulwazi invites all community radio producers and journalists to celebrate 10 years of democracy by telling the success stories that have happened over the past 10 years in their communities.

They can be RDP stories: An old lady has free, clean water for the first time. A school has electricity. Pension payments are occurring regularly. Anti retrovirals have started to roll out.

They can be cultural stories: A writer or a dancer or a musician has scored a great success. A theatre group has started.

They can be civil society stories: New local government elections, new community tourism opportunities, new participation in decision-making.

This is the process:

Once you have found a story, put it on one page and send it to ABC Ulwazi by fax or post or drop it off. You can email it as well. Or you can submit your own 10 minute production (mini-drama or feature). We will select the 20 best stories or productions and will then invite those 20 producers or journalists in groups of 5 to ABC Ulwazi for a 14 day hands-on workshop. In these workshops we will assist you in turning the story into an effective radio drama or feature. This will be an exciting participatory learning event.

The 20 final productions will then be judged by an independent panel and three prizes of R5 000, R3 000 and R1000 will be awarded for the top three productions.

Finally, on a suitable public holiday we will celebrate "Jabulani! Passing the Torch of Freedom" in which community radio stations will participate. In the same way that the Olympic Torch is passed form city to city, each community station will broadcast its own story, then telephone the next station and listen to that station's story, and then hand over to that station. It will then do the same thing and hand on to another station, and so on until the circle is complete.

Time is short. So send in your stories or recordings or productions by Friday 12th March. The 4 workshops will take place in April.
