Bona readers rise to the empowerment challenge

Bona Magazine's countrywide empowerment initiative is exceeding all expectations according to Bona editor, Force Khashane who describes early response to the project as "overwhelming and very encouraging".

In keeping with the theme "South Africans have no business being poor", the Bona Empowerment Club (BEC) project focuses primarily on the upliftment and empowerment of Bona readership communities throughout the country. Nationwide regional forums are followed by hands-on workshops aimed at empowering needy communities. Workshops are conducted by experts in their various fields who impart skills such as basic finance, baking for profit, health education and HIV/AIDS awareness. People leave with the necessary skills to start and manage their own businesses under guidance.

Johannesburg's Parktonian Hotel played host to the jam-packed BEC launch forum where guests were treated to a varied itinerary which set the scene for similar launches elsewhere in the country. The second forum, held in Pretoria was a sellout, with large numbers being turned away at the door.

Guests are treated to a sit-down dinner, cultural and poetic contributions, a motivational speaker, entertainment and a presentation by each of the major sponsors - Golden Cloud, Mageu No1, Illovo and Aranda. Although a nominal amount is charged, these workshops continue to be oversubscribed.

Major sponsors involved in the project are thrilled with the response. According to Peter Thloloe, Business Development Director of Aranda Blankets, his company has been "overwhelmed by the interest and enthusiasm of participants", adding that the response to enquiries has been 60% - "we are delighted with this result".

Forthcoming forums will take place in Bloemfontein, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, the Vaal and Port Elizabeth, followed by workshops in each region. For bookings and more information on future dates and venues, call Tel: +27 +11 883 8829.
