About six weeks ago Team Gaia was announced as the SA representatives for the L'Oreal Brandstorm of 2012. Between all the organising, hair appointments, packing and practising I was able to sit the team down and have a quick chat with them.
Team Gaia consists of two marketers (Anna Sellmeyer and Kirsty Webster) and one creative (Tamzyn La Gorce). Although the girls said that they knew they stood a chance of winning they were still shocked to hear they had actually won, happy, but shocked. Kirsty laughs and says that Anna literally had no reaction for the first five minutes, until it all settled in a little bit more.
Even though they don't want to admit it, they are nervous to be representing South Africa at such a prestigious competition. However, through all those nerves they are excited and honoured to be representing our country. For Tamzyn it will be her first time out of the country and one can clearly see that she cannot wait. When asked what it is they will do when they first get to Paris, the answer is "whatever Tamzyn wants to do". It seems that Kirsty and Anna have it all planned out already.
It works like this: 32 countries compete over three (very long) days. Each team has 15 minutes to wow the judges and then 5 minutes to answer the judge's questions. At the end of the competition a 3rd, 2nd and 1st place is awarded. A gala event is held on the first evening so everyone can get acquainted, and on the final night after all is said and done there is a cocktail evening to celebrate.
Team Gaia will be with their lecturer Anthea Whitehead for the entire competition. But this doesn't bother them because of the amount of support Anthea gives them and the push that they need. Anthea definitely has a lot to be proud of and I'm sure the girls are hoping for a guaranteed A.
There is a competition beforehand called The People's Choice Award. Every team puts their picture into an album on the L'Oreal Facebook page and the team with the most likes wins the prize. So you know what to do... Support the girls who are representing South Africa
