Mike Abel, Ogilvy South Africa COO, will be leaving the South African full-service communications network group at the end of September 2008 to move to Sydney, Australia, it was announced late on Friday afternoon, 18 July 2008. “We are very sad that Mike is moving as he has been the fabric of our company for a very long time,” said Nunu Ntshingila, CEO of Ogilvy SA.
She continued, “He has been instrumental in cementing our strong offering in the new media space across the group and driving it nationally in line with our 360-degree approach. Although we will miss him, we wish him well in his ventures in Australia and know he will be very successful overseas. The value Mike will add internationally is testament to the great depth of talent we have been fortunate to have at Ogilvy South Africa.”
Abel joined Ogilvy as account manager on Volkswagen in 1993. He was appointed to the Holding Board in 1997 and within four years he became Ogilvy Cape Town MD. To add to this illustrious career, he was awarded Financial Mail Agency Leader of the Year in 2006. In the same year he was appointed as chief operating officer for Ogilvy South Africa.
“I am extremely sad to be leaving Ogilvy but I have made the personal decision to move to Australia with my family to ensure their safety following a number of direct crime-related incidents,” said Abel, outgoing Ogilvy SA COO.
“During my 15 years with Ogilvy I have truly loved my time here and have had the privilege to work with a group of individuals and friends that all possess exceptional depth of talent and skills. Together we have built a truly integrated advertising and communications company able to offer a full 360-degree range of marketing services. I have also worked with amazing clients whose brands are all leaders in their respective categories.”
Abel has made no final decision regarding his employment in Australia but is said to be considering a number of “very exciting and significant opportunities”.
The ad world in this country will be so much poorer without Mike, what a damn pity - how many more gifted folk will we still lose before the ANC bloody well wake up!
Good luck in Oz Mike.

I agree, Mike is huge loss to the industry. But please this has nothing to do with the ANC. This should be a joint venture with the - communities, police, business and our own selfishness!! Evertime someone is living its suppose to the ruling party?? When was the last time you did anything to prevent or alert anyone about any crime? You probably smoke something isnt that crime of sorts??? Posted on 22 Jul 2008 12:48
Our ministers of Safety & Security, Health, Home Affairs and even our National Police Comissioner are all incompetent, arrogant fat cats. To think I voted ANC in '94 gives me the shudders - especially after being a victim of crime (hijacking x 2, theft) myself and having had dear friends and neighbours lose their lives and the use of their legs due to spinal injury (gunshot for a cellphone). Please - the ANC is now largely supported by those who are uneducated and don't understand democracy. Like Julius Malema and rural folk. Need I say any more - even destitute Zimbabweans still vote for Mugabe, who has billions stashed away - how does a president get this kind of wealth on his salary????????? Posted on 22 Jul 2008 14:25
We only hear about our Industry Giants leaving, but the youngsters are fleeing to-
My husband & I (both in Advertising) leave SA for greener pastures soon. In the last 1 month we have both lost 5 friends (all in advertising) to Aus, NZ, Canada & the UK. I have 2 colleagues leaving for Europe at the end of the month to take up creative positions there and my husband has a colleague leaving this month to go back to England. Other friends in the creative industry, all have strong plans to emigrate in the next year.
South Africa is hemorrhaging it's great young creative talent at an insane rate as well as losing all our heavyweight, top people.
It's a very sad time for us and we leave SA with very heavy hearts but it has become to expensive and too dangerous to try and make it work here anymore.
All the very best to you and your family in Aus Mike. Posted on 23 Jul 2008 10:51
I'm one of the many who has picked up and left. After the second time my car was stolen in a year (ten years ago), I made the decision to leave. Trust me, it's not an easy decision to make. All my family remains back in S.A. Now living in the U.S., I look back with sadness every time my sister mentions crime. She returned home after work one day three months in Durban to find a police car in her garden. They had just been burgled, in broad day light, with my 4-year old niece at home. My other sister was held up at gun point in broad day light in Durban for her hand bag. And my younger brother was accosted and robbed by four "previously disadvantaged" youth on his way to hockey practice after school. It's simply not safe, and unless something drastic happens, S.A. will continue to lose top talent. Some friends who have left fro Oz and England have returned saying they missed their families, only to later say they should never have gone back. Posted on 28 Jul 2008 18:02
