Malawi's Journalists Association Against AIDS (JournAIDS) with support from Population Action International (PAI) is implementing a climate change advocacy project in Malawi with an aim of integrating gender and population into climate issues in the country.

Roger Mark De Souza: Impressive credentials.
JournAIDS Programme officer, Dingaan Mithi said similar projects are also being implemented by other partner organisations in Kenya, Nepal and Ethiopia.

As part of the project, JournAIDS is holding a symposium focusing on how this integration can be achieved which is also aligned to the 2006 National Adaptation Plan of Action (NAPA) developed by the government of Malawi with support from Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Impressive credentials

The symposium, which has drawn together participants from the media, civil society and government line ministries, will be attended by a top climate change expert, Roger Mark De Souza who is vice president of Research and director of the Climate Program at Population Action International.

Mithi said the media and the country in general is set to benefit from De Souza's experience of 20 years in progressive research, field operations, policy advocacy, communications and fundraising.

Previously, De Souza worked at the Sierra Club, the largest and oldest environment grassroots non-profit organisation in the USA, as the director of Foundation and Corporate Relations for the Club's Climate Recovery Partnership.

The aims

Mithi said prior to working at the Sierra Club, De Souza served for 10 years as technical director for population, health and environment at the Population Reference Bureau, where he provided strategic planning, technical oversight and outreach for programs in Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Caribbean and the United States.

"The project aims at strengthening engagement of the government, media and civil society organisations in the integration of gender, population and climate change," he said.

Mithi said the project also aims at lobbying government through the Ministry of natural resources and environment and the environmental affairs department to revise the 2006 NAPA.
