Life in the Mothership city

What a busy weekend this past one has been. Skrillex has been and gone in Cape Town and Joburg; new time contributor Brandon Williams reports back on life on the Mothership. The crazy colour fest that is Holi One has left its mark in more ways than one on the many that attended its birth at the Grand Parade this past Saturday, and the Design Indaba Expo saw flocks of trendies descending on the CTICC. We report back on it all.

As usual, there is hardly any time to catch your breath as there are many more worthy entertainment events to look forward to. Sexpo heats things up this week in Cape Town, while Ramfest begins its two-week domination of the south. The Flamjangled Tea Party is scheduled to invade Durbanville with its magical quirkiness from 15-17 March, and the recently launched Parklife Acoustics Music Fest is set to debut in Joburg and Cape Town the following week.

In news of a different kind, motoring editor Henrie Geyser is impressed by the feisty Ford Fiesta, and Angie White experiences the gastronomically lavish life at the newly opened Shimmy Beach Club.

In theatre news, Debbie Hathway gives her take on the Dance Umbrella's special 25-year anniversary, while Eugene Yiga reports back on the engaging Voices Made Night, and the witty tribute Noël and Gertie.

New competitions this week include two tickets to the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert featuring Jeremy Loops, tickets to Slick Swing at Grandwest and two tickets to the Cape Getaway Show in Somerset West.

Peace!

Theatre

Launching careers 25 years on
[Debbie Hathway] What I've learned about choreographic dance platforms is to expect the unexpected, where mastery may be juxtaposed with absurdity, artistry with self-indulgence, technical excellence with raw potential. There will always be pieces; artists and choreographers as unforgettable as there are those that are forgettable and Dance Umbrella's special 25-year anniversary season programme was no exception.
