Red Hot Sugarman

Captonians and Joburgers have definitely been treated to some damn fine musical entertainment recently. The Red Hot Chili Peppers conquered SA last week, while the nation's prodigal son, Rodriquez returned to an extremely welcoming country this past weekend (something like nine sold out concerts I believe); photographer Mary Fay Everard snaps some up close and personal pics of RHCP and Die Antwoord in Cape Town, while first time contributor Hector van der Walt finds Sugarman at Grand West.

In silver screen news, Daniel Dercksen reports back on the mind-boggling Anna Karenina, and the box office local rom-com hit Klein Karoo. Dercksen also reviews the "just in time for V Day" theatre production February 14th, while Debbie Hathway is delighted by Jazzart Dance Theatre's Lerato.

Henrie Geyser reviews Car of the Year contender, the Golf 7, while Jordan Scott glams up for the Made to Fly J&B Met.

New competitions this week include one full weekend pass to Ramfest in Cape Town and two tickets to the next Kirstenbosch Summer Concert featuring Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse.

Happy Valentine's day for Thursday, go love the world!

Cape Town Tens
[Jordan Scott] First things first, as a lady I don't understand rugby very well. I know that the ball goes through the poles and you can only throw backwards and that is the extent of it. However, I am all for learning and what better way than at the world's biggest Tens' tournament. Read more >>

Busting the Colombia travel myth
[Eugene Yiga] The initial reaction to my news was one of disbelief. "Why, of all places on Earth, are you going there?" It's true that most South American tourists stick to the familiar pleasures of Argentina and Brazil. Colombia, notorious for violence and drugs, is hardly considered at all. And what a shame! Made To Fly Met
[Jordan Scott] This is the 36th year that J&B has sponsored The Met. The theme "Made To Fly" was actually based around the idea of "Made To Succeed", which J&B felt they have done over and over again. The race used to be run on Green Point common; British soldiers attached to the Cape Garrison would race and the ladies in all their attire would watch and cheer them on. Although not British, the jockeys of the 2013 Met are certainly soldiers and many ladies were in their very best - and the cheering was mind-blowing. Read more >>

An ordinary legend, finding Sugar Man
[Hector van der Walt] The dramatic red curtain opening of Rodriquez concert at the Grand West Arena on 9 February revealed a Spartan stage and a frail but familiar looking figure centre stage. Having returned from the "dead" for his South African disciples the late start to his first show was quickly forgotten. Read more >>
