'Tis the season to be Gaga

Well into music fest / concert season, it's a challenge to go a day without bumping into a worthwhile musical happening of some kind. With Synergy Live and the great Gaga ticked off, it's time to polish up those dancing shoes once again for the EDM Fest, Rock the River, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and countless other events! Check our pics for all the festivities that went down at Synergy Live in Cape Town this past weekend, however Gaga pics there are none as SA photographers were banned from covering the concerts. What's up with that, is Miss Monster afraid of a photographer catching a bad angle?

In other music news, Bieber Fever strikes as Justin Bieber has been officially confirmed for an SA tour in May 2013, the international headliners have been announced for the CT Jazz Festival, Michael Britton reviews the guitar masters seen at International Guitar Night, and I review Bittereinder's noteworthy second album, Die Dinkdansmasjien.

In theatre news, Eugene Yiga reviews Mark Lottering's latest stand-up show, I Don't Work On Sundays, and Daphne Cooper is enchanted and amused by Minnie and Johnson.

Charles Siboto reminisces on his favourite Bonds, and Daniel Dercksen is resolutely underwhelmed by Afrikaans musical Pretville.

New competitions this week include two tickets to Zebra and Giraffe at the Old Mutual Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert, Rock the River and the EDM Festival in Cape Town.

Party on all yea monsters great and small!

Volkswagen's blue is the new green
[Henrie Geyser: motoring editor] Thanks to a technological magic wand that turns blue into green I recently drove a sexy four-door coupe at a less then leisurely pace from Gansbaai to Hout Bay using an average of just 5.8 litres/100km of costly juice for the journey. Read more >>

Infiniti performance sedans arrive
[Henrie Geyser: motoring editor] Infiniti could not have timed it better if they tried - in the same week that Sebastian Vettel put up a spectacular pits-to-podium performance in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with the Infiniti emblem emblazoned on his Red Bull racing car and on his racing suit, the brand launched its exciting new range of M sedans in South Africa. Top of The Table - now there's a baie slim idea
[Brian Berkman: contributing editor, travel] When it came to selecting a location for new photographs reflecting the new, slimmer me, I thought immediately of The Table Bay Hotel. I asked Fabiani's Waterfront store to lend me garments to use for the shoot for which I'd hired photographer Hetty Zantman. Read more >>

Little imagination in Pretville
[Daniel Dercksen] The new Afrikaans musical Pretville is unlike anything you have ever seen locally. It spells fun with a capital F and delivers what it promises, and much, much more. In fact, there's so much more that the little that is left, leaves nothing to the imagination. Read more >>

If the Sky Should Fall
[Charles Siboto] "The name's Bond, James Bond". These words, though iconic and catchy, have never mattered much to me. I like James Bond, but not to the degree that I care whether he takes his martini shaken or stirred. As Daniel Craig's Bond says in Casino Royale (2006) when asked whether he wants his martini shaken or stirred: "Do I look like I give a damn?" Bond's just a guy who kicks ass, has cool toys and gets laid more often than not. Read more >>

International Guitar Night
[Michael Britton] International Guitar Night (IGN) is a series of shows designed to bring "the world's greatest and most accomplished acoustic guitar players" to South Africa. The brainchild of Tony Cox, South Africa's own internationally acclaimed guitar wizard, the stated focus of IGN is to feature guitar players who "pluck the strings creating bass, rhythm, melody and percussive lines all at the same time, coaxing a mini-orchestra from the six strings". Initial lineup for Rock the River SA 2012 released
This year's Rock the River SA New Year's Festival will take place from 28 December, 2012, to 1 January, 2013, at the Savannah Farm (Windmeul Road, Perdeberg), located 30 minutes' drive from Cape Town (and 20 minutes' drive from Durbanville). Read more >>

A bitter pill
[Ruth Cooper] The holy trinity power house team of, Jaco van der Merwe, Louis Minaar and Peach van Pletzen are truly a combined force to be reckoned with. Jaco's lazy gruff rapping style and cleverly conscious lyrics, Peach's multi-instrumentalist multi- talent tsunami and Louis' brilliant creative mind and skill create a super group of note. The only baffling thing is the fact that Bittereinder are not better acknowledged and celebrated. Perhaps now with second album offering "Die Dinkdansmasjien" things will shift. The SA music industry seems to be nodding their heads in appreciation and time to the beat. Read more >>

I Don't Work On Sundays
[Eugene Yiga] After a sold-out season earlier this year, comedian Marc Lottering is back with I Don't Work On Sundays at Cape Town's Baxter Theatre. Judging by the non-stop laugher that left many people barely able to contain themselves, adding some extra performances might be required! Read more >>

Minnie and Johnson - maximum delight
[Daphne Cooper] The two cabaret artists, Emile Minnie and Godfrey Johnson, do a show that is an absolute delight. Kalk Bay Theatre is the ideal venue for this intimate show, which offers something for everyone. Read more >>
