New treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension in SA

Just a few years ago, there was no effective treatment for primary pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and sufferers could expect to live just two or three years after the onset of the disease. Within tarantula venom, new hope for safe and novel painkillers found

Screening more than 100 spider toxins, Yale researchers identified a protein from the venom of the Peruvian green velvet tarantula that blunts activity in pain-transmitting neurons. The findings, reported in the 3 March 2014 issue of the journal Current Biology, show the new screening method used by the scientists has the potential to search millions of different spider toxins for safe pain-killing drugs and therapies.

For older hypertension patients, an unwelcome trade-off

Medications used by many older people to control their blood pressure also increase the risk of serious fall injuries by 30% to 40% - injuries that have a similar effect on mortality and functional loss as the strokes and heart attacks the blood pressure drugs are meant to prevent - according to a new study by Yale School of Medicine researchers in the 24 February 2014 issue of JAMA Internal Medicine.
