Ready the popcorn

Dim the lights and ready the popcorn, October promises to be a cinema-packed month in Cape Town and Joburg with two film fests currently doing the rounds. The shnit International shortfilmfestival alights in Cape Town from 3-7 October with the promise of showcasing the best of the best in world class short films. Then later this month the blood and gore-packed Horrorfest returns to the Cape for the 8th time and Joburg for the first time.

In music news, Sindy Peters interviews two very diverse artists, Chloƫ Agnew from Celtic Woman, and finds out more about Mr Cat & the Jackal's latest music video Where's my shoes.

On the theatrical side of things, Eugene Yiga recommends current productions, Siv Ngesi's Race Card, and the music and theatre-packed FNB Variété Festival.

Brian Berkman experiences the holy trinity of hospitality and travel experience at ZuluWaters, and Nina Timm shares her latest recipe just in time for springtime, Halva ice cream.

Have a great week further, and if you're rocking them daisies, we'll see you there!

Horrorfest 2012: Still scary as hell

Bizarre how both instantly paint an undesirable stereotype hooked on entertainment we've all secretly indulged. Now think why. You have? Wonderful. Now that we've all had time to reflect and laugh at our choices of recreation, it's easier for me to ask you without any immediate satanic associations: Keen to nurture your love of horror? Dredd
[Daniel Dercksen] In its new visceral incarnation, Dredd explodes in a spectacular bloodbath of hard-core violence and raw action. Based on John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip, which was created in 1977 for 2000AD, Dredd is brought to life by the endlessly inventive mind of screenwriter Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later and Sunshine) and visionary director Pete Travis (Vantage Point). Playing the Race Card
[Eugene Yiga] After a sell-out season at Grahamstown's National Arts Festival, comedian Siv Ngesi kicks off the Race Card national tour at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. This brand new one-man show is inspired by The Racist's Guide To The People Of South Africa, a bestseller that's been described as a politically incorrect, thoroughly unscientific, and exceptionally funny satirical guidebook that identifies and makes light-hearted fun of all South Africans.
