an over view of the state of primetime radio
THE DJ SBU BREAKFAST SHOW

I find myself listening to THE DJ SBU BREAKFAST SHOW all the time but ask myself why... and this constantly happens. the show is clogged with features and Sbus spark has not necessarily diminished but it has somehow become fatigued.... do u think maybe a shift to the drivetime would do wonders for him? can he fit into any other commercial radio station after his tenure at Y is over? I must say though that the brothers is raking in big bucks for the station but that does not necessarily mean his presenting skills are uo to scratcth either.

RADIO2000 breakfast

just ice is super magodovious bosssssst on the breakfast dial. just when you would have thought he couldnt get any better. Is he really competition for phat lips ( JOE ) ? is radio2000 as o station a threat to Kaya fm`s ever growing audiences as radio2000 is , from my opinion, very on point when it comes to their music and the calibre of djs it has raked in. come to think of it, om even starting to hear adverts now..... something foreign to the radio2000 brand. Maybe their black-audince-targeting idea is really pulling off ?

BREAKFAST WITH THOMAS

the less said the better. no fire works, very relaxed, not informative, little or no contoversy....... cant tghey see that their breakfast show on metro needs a serious intervention?

5FM MORNINGS WITH GARETH

he is a legend.... constantly re-inventing himself and always makes raio interesting. has got co-hosts and a team that can relate to him and they have this unmatched synergy on air.... makes for a good breakfast show....

THIS BRINGS ME TO MY QUESTION TO YOU GUYS , ESPECIALLY THOSE APPRICIATE AND FOLLOW THE RADIO SCENE AND WOULD LOVE TO LUISTEN TO SERIOUSLY GOOD RADIO.. WHAT PRIMETIME SHOW IS WORKING FOR YOU ( i.e. you can at least stomach over an hour of it ) ? WHICH ONE DO YOU THINK SERIOUSLY NEEDS A WAKE UP SHAKE UP OR THE DJ SERIOUSLY NEEDS TO BE AXED?.... i dont believe radio is dead, it can only get better from here on.

primetime radio-
i seriously think that all the breakfast shows are dead except for mansfield and gareth cliff. dj sbu's show is a bit too hectic for me in the sense that its too bloody clogged up with content and too rowdy at times but is a heck of a lot better than thomas and phat lips.

phat joe is just not cutting it, the show just has no structure or firworks at all. the only highlight of the show is the sports and the business updates mainly because the guys incharge of these slots know their shit. as for the anchor himself, he's totally lost it, he sucks big time!!!

thomas on metro is such a big bore, that show must be canned come april next year. its just not working at all. either segale must hire fresh or get adil to do the damn show. Posted on 19 Aug 2008 19:06

sbu for breakfast presidency-
Sbu has also become the better option for me too. needless to say, the sho aint too much to make a whooooaaaa about but he is seriously kicking in da morningz.... gosh, but why do they pay him 100grand a month? Posted on 20 Aug 2008 15:35

The morning radio is just average across the board-
I listen to Phat Joe and Sbu in the mornings but both shows are just average, as for Gareth he is good but the music doesn't do it for me. I tried 702 but John Robbie is just not talking to a 29 yr old like me, Thomas I stopped listening to him last year I still think he was better doing the midday show and they need to give breakfast to Adil. All in all the breakshows are just average, a lot still need to be done, making money is one thing but presenting a good show is another I think that's what Sbu is doing at Y. some shows are just DEAD-
Primetime or primetime morning?
Well I'll stick to breakast:

Gareth is way talented and is always
reinventing himself and 'aligning' with
his audiene. I find myself listening
to Gareth Cliff every morning. I
love the music eventhough I'm swart.
The team complements him perfectly,
wish more people would listen to him.

Phat Joe is down and out, the man needs
to either wkae up and smell the coffee
(realise that he's producing crapp and
revamp his show) or quit. Frankly I reckon
The Phat Joe Morning show is wack!

I am NOT appealed by Sbu's show on Yfm and
I'm only in early 20's. He comes across to me
as a 'DJ Fresh wannabe', Yfm doesn't
represent my successes/my hopes/my dreams/.
-It's just me. AND he is overpaid for what he
delivers is way below par to even draw me to
listen.

Thomas just needs to return to Yfm, hookup with
Lee and Sanza for the 12-3pm show. He
was only successful then, period.

Radio2000 breakfast is dry. I don't like
the show. They say he's witty, I say
he tries too hard to TRY make me laugh.
The content is high level to digest in
the morning...the 'government service delivery'
isn't inspiring information you know!

I certainly do not like 702 (Robbie is too
judgemental, he's perceptions are all
crooked). SAfm sucks: That black woman is
not competent enough to handle the high
level guests and topics. She makes mistakes
half the time. SAfm needs to improve their
website, it is surely run by someone half
clueless.

That's my take on breakfast radio. Posted on 20 Aug 2008 19:08

nice analysis by radioman and wirelesss-
i do however still maintain that the current radio2000 djs have injected a lot of life into that station. Sbu, as an on-air personality has greatly matured over time. maybe ther ukhozi fm stint has something to do about it..... there are , of late, a lot of burning debates that he incoperates into his show..... he is also able to extend the appeal of y to even the upper end of the listenership scale... segale mogotsi shud axe Thomas ASAP, i mean the guy is a joke .... TOTALLY. i know i stand to be slaughtered by the stonch metro listeners but the guy is pathetic for breakfast.

gareth is extremely good, i maintain, pity he does not have that much of an appeal to the black audiences coz he wud claim the morning airwaves like its no body`s business Posted on 20 Aug 2008 20:28

Just Ice on Radio 2000 breakfast is the man.-
I am happy that I now have a breakfast show to listen to in the morning while driving to work since Just Ice started hosting the breakfast show on Radio 2000.I love his creative humour and style of presenting. He has increased Radio 2000 listenership in the afternoon and he will continue to do that in the morning.

Nobody does it for me in the morning except for Just Ice.Gareth on 5FM has to be the most boring DJ to ever host the breakfast show on SA radio.I find myself questioning his talent as he is too slow for a breakfast show and does not have the most basic DJ skill of back anouncing a song.He talks as if he is reading and tries to hard to be funny.Everytime I listen to him he makes me think that every person on the street can be a Radio DJ. Radio ARVIE
Radio in general-
I`m so glad that there are people who are seeing the current state of radio for what it is not the hyped up marketing press releases that are sent out.

5 Fm, Gareth seems to have slowed down. We knew him as a witty, in your face , try and piss me off kind of host. But he has become formatted. the show is still well constructed , but doesn`t grab me.

Phat joe- trying to hard to be Kiss Fm. His jokes are so 2001. Some of the skits he does are played out. I don`t even hear any current topics or listeners for that matter. Does he have any listeners? He should bow out gracefully. he set a standard years ago and was a legend. But now the world has changed.

Just Ice- Don`t know what`s going on there. There`s something about the SABC that kills talent. What happened to the witty comments, the insightful opinions he used to have. And lately his command of teh English language is bad. I`m not great at English, but i can hear when the language is being massacred. I didn`t like the kids in the morning previously but Ice isn`t doing it.

John Robbie. He used to entertain me, but the complaining and the fake happy stories just make me sick. he has an average of 1 great topic a month. Just not doing it for me. If it wasn`t for the news stories I wouldn`t be tuning in.To his credit, the producers do a good job of keeping him up to date.

Thomas, Metro. Why does metro fm still have a licence to broadcast. The show is no longer relevant. Segale should do the honourable thing and just let them go. Anyone else would do a better job. As much a few people might find it entertaining, there is no direction there. The make Azania sound like she was good.

Sbu, sbu is loud in your face, not the greatest voice and has no idea how to present a show. There is a reason why he is there. he is different. I can`t stand him , but you have a better time puking at what he is saying than listening to what the other stations are doing. He is doing what Y FM was before Bondo came and massacred the dream. Do you remember how Y FM was before the orge took over? That`s what`s SBU is doing. I think he is a pompous ass who shouldn`t be allowed in a studio , but lets be honest he show is making all the other guys look like grown monkeys.

Jeremy and the team. I don`t listen to highveld, but when I do, I feel sorry for the other stations. There is a reason why more affluent darkies are tuning into this drivel. They make the whole experience fun!!!! FUN!!!!!! and when they go serious, they make you cry. One time or another you wish that the other stations could understand that we want to listen to people who are happy!!!!
I don`t listen to highveld because they have made so much money from making the other stations look stupid. Everything we do, we`ll do it better and you`ll realise that we have done it before. That`s how they work. Out of compassion for our darkies I don`t listen.

Jacaranda- the mixed language and dumb jokes they don`t do it for me. Yes Darren Scott but the rest are dead.

That`s my take in Gauteng. Other provinces are trying, but just aint good enough. Capricorn sounds like a community station, Bondo is killing Mpower Fm, North West , well they have some humour but dead. East Coast should just give up and we won`t talk about the cape. Its like another country.

That`s my take Posted on 21 Aug 2008 11:48
FEMALE JOCKS-
Why, oh why are people like Elana Afrika still allowed on radio? I may be wrong, but she pretty much leads the charge when it comes to bad female jocks countrywide. Posted on 21 Aug 2008 13:01

I have a feeling that Thomas is going to move to the midday slot next year with a different team. Posted on 21 Aug 2008 15:53

Sbu v Gareth v Thomas-
Nice comments from wireless Ears and Radioman.

DJ Sbu'da

I have to agree with Radio Arvie with regard to DJ Sbu. I wrote in another forum that he also sux because of his voice but I must admit once in a while they do cover content that makes you laugh your black ass out loud while stuck in traffic. It doesn't happen everyday but when it does it really is a gem. My biggest problem with DJ Sbu's show is the VOLUME and lack of clarity. You often have too many people talking at the same time, some laughing, some coughing - it can be havoc on the ears. Plus the only advert played is that wild bean stuff which is all very well except that it plays every 3 seconds.

Gareth

Guys you MUST admit as much as he has absolutely no appeal to the black market (unless you're a coconut - which I'm not ashamed to say I am) when it comes to good delivery and quirky content, you're safe with him. This is the only show I can listen to from start to finish without checking what's on the other radio stations. Even when I'm not diggin the music I usually won't bother changing the station in case I miss him ratting on that Cias guy who always sounds like he's speaking from the basement.

Thomas

Ayi no. If you want to fall asleep all over again just after you've woken up, listen to this guy. His laid back and kinda gayish voice with put heavy lead in your eyelids and make you fall right back to lala-land. I do laugh at that silly Regina person though but it's not enough to keep a show going.

That's my piece. Posted on 21 Aug 2008 16:59
INNUENDO
what insightful comments-
its always nice to hear from people who either work on radio or have love for the medium. i have got to add though that, it is evident form your opinions guys that Sbu is making in-roads in the black commercial radio market.

What pisses me off, however, is the idea that acting as a philanthropist and riding on your celebrity status makes for good radio. Sbu is not good at all but is set aside by his different take to radio....... i.e. the kasi thing , etc, which makes him relevant. I am sad to say that , this is not something i am getting ffrom his black jock competitors.

trust me, there are djs who are primetime material out there but from the stations view point its a matter of who will appeal to the advertisers as a brand. Tholi b, grant and anele, redi direko, just to name a few. these guys aRE UNIQUE AND WHILST TUNED INTO THEIR SHOWS, YOU CAN HEAR THE AMOUNT OF WORK AND CREATIVITY PUT INTO IT, and flip, YOU CAN HEAR THAT THEY ARE ENGAGED IN WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND ARE ACTUALLY ENJOYING IT.......

co-hosting should be about synergy, not a matter of trial and error coz it makes for bad radio... look at Kamza & Nicole of radio2000, they are literally choking each other as the synergy aint there. the other worst cases are MAKHOSI AMD THANDI ( RADIO 2000 ), LINDA & SBONGA ( UKHOZI ), .......

WITH THIS SAID, I LOOOOOVE RADIO.... Posted on 22 Aug 2008 09:47
So Right!-
Innuendo you're right about this co-hosting thing, most are not working at all, especially those at Radio 2000. I still believe they made an error by teaming-up Kamza & Nicole, they're definitely not contemplating each other, Kamza was good with Thando & they understood & gelled with each other. My view-
Sbu's Show - I think the reason why Sbu has maneuvered ahead of the rest is due to the fact that he keeps it simple & sticks to the basics. He understands the culture & mission of Yfm & he's just delivering on that. The rest of the breakfast shows are too 'urban' & upper-classed, trying to sound intelligent & know-it-all. Sbu reliazed that there is a gap, even within Yfm, as far as serving the ghetto'd & kasie crowd & he took advantage of that. And now those who had considered themselves 'matured' and had claimed that they've 'out-grown' Yfm are now getting tired & bored with the Thomases, Gareths & John Robbies of this world and are making a Y-turn, finding Sbu refreshing & different. Sbu comes out as someone you can relate to whether you're in Soweto, Sandton or Hillbrow, he's in touch with the street.

Gareth's Show - He still offers good, fun & easy radio, stuff you wanna get before a stressful day at work, but he's not the Gareth Cliff he was when he was still on the afternoon show, he has lost some of that bite & F-you attitude he used to have, perhaps the BCCSA has worn him out. Some of his discussions though are not that appealing to the Black audience, unless if you're an Elana, like discussing bra-sizes & colours, tap-water in Knysa or Britney's hair. I still think Fresh will do justice to 5fm listenership on the morning slot.

John Robbie's Show - Now that's a master of talk-radio, the last competition he had was John Perlman. He's the most influential person on South African media right now & what he says carries more weight than Mondli Makhanya & Khathu Mamaila combined, that's why people like Mbhazima Shilowa, Irvin Khoza,Tony Leon,et al listen to him religiously. He will even tell you while reading an ad feed that 'Tell them John Robbie sent you!'.You get all informative by listening to just 30-minutes of his show, up-to-date & relevant, not the crap we get from SAFM.

Thomas - Totally played out of position & you can hear that he's not on his comfort zone, outrageously under-pressure and tries too hard to prove a point. Badboy T is the undisputed champion of 12-3, remember The Beat, Harambe & The Family?, that's why Metro brought him in the first place. His current team is not helping him at all, Lupi is too individualistic for a drive-time show, BBK? eish, he must stick to print-media & make way for someone who was bred for radio.

Phat Joe - The biggest error Charlene made was to bring Joe straight from retirement & into a flagship show. Beside the fact that Joe was still rusty, the Kaya market was new to him & he needed to adjust & be 'groomed' beforehand. Perhaps they should've teethed him with a weekend breakfast slot & given the prime breakfast slot to someone already acclimatized to Kaya then, like Just-Ice or even Tboz! But alas, now any re-locating for JoJo will be like a demotion.

Jeremy Mansfield - Now that's what I call a total family show. Him & the team are really having a jol, they gel & understand each other very well. They know their market & are delivering to the audience with flying colours, no wonder advertisers & sponsors are clogging their show, making it the biggest cash machine in town. To me this is the best breakfast show since Yfm's Live & Dangerous (PhatJoe, Dadaman, Leo Manne & David Kau...damn I miss the 90s)...but like Gareth, appeal to the Black market is still on low gear. On Point Lerumo-
Firstly, big up to an awesome forum to the person who initiated, this is good.

And Lerumo's comment is so on point. These guys, Tholi B, Mo Flava, Adil, MacG, Amon Mokoena must be given the forefront in Radio to give/present good Radio, well maybe a party slot still sticks for MacG......

I am highly dissappointed with Thomas, when he joined Metro I got excited and hoped they'd give him the Breakfast slot and they did, then he came on and it was like BadBoyT died.....he has changed so much, is so toned down and slow it's actually unbelievable.............I miss the Thomas from the Beat, Harambe and of course, the family, but knowing Mtero, they won't do anything about that.....

Sbu being the brand that he is is nt likely to go anywhere anytime so, I leave i there. Phat Joe's comeback has already died out....it was so not worth it.

Gareth Cliff is damn good I must say, he never says something and leaves me baffled or thinking huh??? He's very good, a well-informed educated Radio jock.....who does still target the white audience....and the coconuts.

I'm not feeling Just Ice, his show is very very dry, his topics are a bit worn out for me, sorry but he's not working for me, I last listened to him before Fresh joined YFM Breakfast.......

I just don't do Highveld, that station just doesn't appeal to me.

The most essential Radio would be DJ Fresh with a YFM playlist, that's it....the music on his 5FM show is.......YOH....nah sorry, just cant do it, I listen to him when he's talking then when he plays music I switch to the anger-managed psycho Daddy, Chilli M.

Nevertheless, I still station hop between YFM, Metro and 5FM Posted on 28 Aug 2008 15:11
