Fun in the sun at Loeries 2008

The Loeries weekend kicked off yesterday afternoon, Friday, 25 July 2008, as festival goers from around the country arrived in busloads, queuing up in the Margate Hotel to sort out paperwork before the annual non-stop party weekend began. It's the year to make your mom proud and the branding all over the place has certainly reinforced that!

The Loeries Shop Window Display Competition wasn't much to speak of as, according to local John Spade, everyone's become a bit lazy over the years. It seems the R10 000 prize isn't worth the effort anymore. Strolling along Marine Drive there were three attempts that were actually worth the exercise. Our favourite is the Billabong Pro store.

DJ Festus Masekwameng, who also plays chairman of The Loerie Awards, arrived late at Backstage for the welcome party, but when he did eventually rock up, he hit the decks with some hardcore house. It was around two in the morning before everyone started making their way towards a bed to get some rest for Saturday's action.

While yesterday was quiet, Margate was officially happening today and the weather was hot and sunny, too - a relief from winter temperatures elsewhere. Although the beach volleyball was cancelled, there was foosball, sand sculptures, a youthful band of tradional African drummers, and, as usual, drinking like there's no tomorrow; peering from our dinner table at Panarotti's at 6pm yesterday evening we noticed a bulky, stumbling man trying to make his way down the stairs of the Rondevoux Mall aided by his not so bulky buddy. We bumped into him later on at Backstage where he was still stumbling down stairs and making bear noises as mucous dripped from his nose... We also witnessed our first arrest for the weekend and hope there'll be no more of that.

The Mugg & Bean was pumping as always for breakfast and the Velocity Film pool party - the event that EVERYONE wants to go to - was jam-packed full of young creatives. We heard that the street parade was really short and wasn't something to make mom proud of.

On the spontaneous entertainment side, there haven't been any well-endowed flashers…yet. Or TVs thrown out the window.
