IndieLAB forms in Cape Town

IndieLAB, in Cape Town, plans to host monthly events where anyone who is interested in low-budget filmmaking and especially postproduction, can attend. Kim Krause (Yellow Dog), Richard Lackey (Waterfront Studios) and Mike Brennan (Labspace) founded it, in conjunction with the Cape Film Commission.

The next meeting is Thursday 5 November 2009, which will focus on compositing, motion graphics and effects. Andre van der Merwe and his team from Condor will be presenting their show reel and discussing their work, Jan-Hendrik Beegte will be screening his latest short film The Abyss Boys, Michael Brennan will be demonstrating After Effects and Motion 4 and Richard Lackey will be discussing his latest 35mm film project.

A meeting place; an open forum

It is an environment where otherwise disconnected creative talent can meet to display their work in an open forum. Brennan elaborates, “IndieLAB is a platform for likeminded individuals with similar skills to network.”

The first IndieLAB meeting took place last month in the newly revamped presentation suite at Waterfront Post: an ideal professional venue for independent creatives to present deliverables to clients. “The turnout was huge with a few big names in attendance,” says Lackey, who wants this independent network to grow exponentially in order for it to become a community driven arena. Guest speakers for the evening were Kim Krause and Donovan Bush, both colourists who were available to discuss their projects as well as those brought in by IndieLAB attendees.
