Winning spree for Devdas at India Film Awards
Devdas, a remake of a popular Indian novel, is said to be the most expensive movie ever made in India. It received 12 nominations in 10 categories. Sanjay Leela Bhansali took the award for best director, Shah Rukh Khan won the best actor award and Aishwarya Rai, a former Miss World, won the best female lead role.
The film also took top honours for best lyricist (Nusrat Badr), female playback singer (Shreya Ghosal, Kavita Krishnamurti), and best supporting actress (Kiron Kher).
The best music director award went to A.R. Rahman for his work on Saathiya. The movie also earned Sonu Nigam the award for best male payback singer.
Mohan Lal won the best supporting actor award for his role in Company written by Jaideep Sahni, who won the best story award.
Akshaye Khanna won the best villain award for Humraaz.
Mahesh Manjrekar won the award for best comic role for his performance in Kaante.
A special lifetime award for contribution to Indian cinema was given to Dev Anand and a special diva award to Rekha. Music director Anandji was also honoured with a lifetime award for contribution to cinema.
