Gauteng first to get Sentech broadband Internet access

Gauteng has become the first province to receive Broadband Wireless (BBW) high-speed, no-limit Internet access via radio frequency.

Sentech, better known as SA's TV and radio signal provider, has now launched its affordable BBW service, MyWireless in and around Johannesburg.

Switch-on in selected areas occurred on January 19. Durban will be MyWireless-enabled on February 19. The Cape Town CBD and suburbs go live on March 19.

Sentech's Internet Protocol technology makes true wire-less connectivity possible for the first time in SA.

MyWireless creates an always-on Internet environment without putting a limit on the volume of data a user can send and receive. Users will not be penalised for breaching data 'caps' or for connections and re-connections.

Previously, Internet users relied on fixed telephone lines, WiFi (short-range, tightly focused wireless fidelity that still required a telephone link) or General Packet Radio Services (GPRS), that use cellular telephony and can be expensive.

MyWireless uses high-powered radio networks. High-site transmitters send out signals which are converted by a modem (USB or PCMCIA) supplied by Sentech in its MyWireless kit. The modem can be attached to virtually any desktop or notebook computer. Software is self-installable via CD in a few easy steps.

All terminology, terms and conditions are written in layman's language to help first-time users.

MyWireless has the potential to extend the market for personal Internet access and email to sections of the population that could not previously afford Internet access, says Marcel Raath, Sentech Group Executive: Marketing Services.

After an initial start-up fee, a flat monthly subscription is charged.

The MyWireless service is currently offered by Sentech directly but ultimately will also be available via a network of designated 'retail partners' tasked with product distribution.

MyWireless reception is limited to a 5.7km radius of a high site in built up areas. The quality of reception is influenced by the topology in the coverage area.

Potential users can check if they are within the MyWireless zone by visiting the Sentech website (www.sentech.co.za), clicking the MyWireless icon and hitting the 'coverage' button.

A range of MyWireless accessories such as Ethernet cables and patch antennas will be available soon.

Sentech's MyWireless 128 is aimed at the residential market and the two even faster products, MyWireless 256 and MyWireless 512 are aimed at small business owners

Anyone interested can apply online through the Sentech website. "The arrival of affordable, high-speed Internet access has been eagerly awaited, noted Raath.

"The launch of MyWireless makes it more vital than ever that users check their options before signing or renewing Internet contracts. MyWireless creates a choice of price and technology. Gauteng consumers have first choice. They should use it."

  • Johannesburg areas covered by MyWireless high-site transmitters are: Honeydew, Brixton, Randburg, Helderkruin, Linksfield, Hurleyvale, Northcliff, Killarney and Marlboro. Even if users reside within these suburbs, it is imperative that they check that their specific street address falls within the coverage zone using the "zone locator" on the Sentech website or by calling the Sentech Call Centre @ 0860 7368324.
