Bursaries for electronic media offered

14 Oct 2009 07:4022 commentsBizLike
The National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa NEMISA and SABC Education are offering bursary opportunities to the value of R1 million.
Students interested in a career in electronic media should apply before 31 October 2009 for the following bursaries.

  • Diplomas in graphic design in multimedia and animation - candidates need Matric/Grade 12 / NQF level 4 related qualification and Mathematics and English at NQF level 4. They must undergo an entrance exam and present a visual portfolio.
  • National Certificate in television production - candidates need matric/grade 12 / NQF level 4 qualification and an aptitude interview.
  • National Certificate in radio production - candidates need matric/grade 12 / NQF level 4 qualification, English language NQF level 4 and an aptitude interview.
The National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA) and SABC Education offers the bursaries, valued at R1 million.

“SABC Education is always looking for opportunities to assist learners in making a success of their career. This partnership offers incredible opportunities for learners in the broadcasting environment,” says Danie Swart, marketing manager at SABC Education.

Simphiwe Ngcobo, head of business development and marketing from NEMISA says, "The institute has been training young people from diverse backgrounds since 2000 on a fulltime basis in the areas of television and radio production, with just under 40 students a year. The students primarily came from disadvantaged backgrounds with emphasis on women who made up at least 60% of the student population. It has grown and now produces more than 160 graduates a year in various accredited programmes who have found employment in large media companies.”

To download application forms, go to www.nemisa.co.za or www.sabceducation.co.za or call NEMISA on +27 (0) 11 484 0583

NEMISA Bursaries:What took you so long?????????????-
What took NEMISA so long to work directly with SABC???After close to 10 years of NEMISA mismanagement, shady deals and using the card of previously disadvantaged students to suck more funding from government, we will probably see change, but SABC also has its own problems, maybe they are using this as a PR exercise...fat salaries, unqualified trainers and self enrichment at NEMISA was a problem...I think an investigation is needed on how NEMISA has been using public funds from its inception until now. they always had them-
Its just that they were given to a chosen few Posted on 14 Oct 2009 11:03

Why Matric?-
There's that magic piece of paper again..

I have been subcontracting for signwriters since I was 12 years old.. in fact that was my first income stream.. lightyears before I had a matric certificate.. and all they needed to know was that I had the drive and the skills..

A propensity for the media & marketing industries is not something that can be learnt. It's hardwired to your DNA. The only reason we do courses is so companies can employ us.. and funnily the best web & multimedia designers are the ones who are self-taught anyway. Textbooks and lecturers inculcate the "my way or the highway" mindset, which goes against what the creative industries are about.

A perfect example is www.digiguru.co.za.. Craig has not attended a single course to do what he does.. and he's done work for internatonal clients.

So now that you create an opportunity for youngsters to do courses, you ask for a Matric certificate.. meaning anybody with that piece of paper will be considered, while the guy who will blow creative directors out the water but has no Matric is left out in the cold.

yes I understand the system was inherited.. but does that mean it has to be perpetuated? Posted on 14 Oct 2009 11:02

coz, it matters.-
err, I hear your argument --- but I'd raise you this: one can't break the rules one does not know.

education, if seen differently from your perspective, is to share learnt knowledge --- knowledge that came before you.

Without that knowledge, one might as well start teaching: Cartesian plane to a 1st year student --- understanding the Cartesian plane at least would mean x,y coordinates are somewhat understood (which are used in web/interactive design and development)

plus, the learning curve of a self taught person is longer than one who acquires the knowledge through academia --- and what's more important, it's easier to add new unknown knowledge to what is already known.

Alas, before I start speaking as if I am in class --- point is, Matric is a requirement because it informs the institution that this specific learner has learnt this or that.

But, I am fully aware there is 'recognition of prior learning' - which is not limited to academia, it just means one has to provide proof that 'they have learnt' (be it formally or informally). Posted on 14 Oct 2009 12:52

Stunned-
Wow...I am just amazed at the negative comments posted here! My sister was given a bursary to study at Nemisa and I am proud to say the same teachers that "came out of Varsity and went straight to Nemisa" were passionate, gave their best made sure that these students did THEIR best! They have their diplomas now and are now employed by great companies all over SA. I wonder where these teachers should have came from if not Varsity...???
I encourage all students to apply for the bursary as their future lies in their hands alone & no one elses.
