Theatre buzz

Cape Town certainly seems to be buzzing with many new worthwhile theatre productions. Eugene Yiga and Daniel Dercksen report back on some of the current plays gracing Cape Town stages. Find out more about Bench, Other People's Lives, Biko's Quest, and Understanding the Orchestra.

In music news, Idols pop darling Adam Lambert is scheduled for an SA tour; he shall be in Cape Town and Joburg in November, top international EDM djs are announced to perform at Joburg's EDM Fest in December, and Justin Williams reports back on Alien Safari's annual outdoor season-starter Sprung.

Travel editor Brian Berkman finds out what Graham Beck hospitality manager Gaby Gramm loves about working in the luxury hospitality industry, and falls in love with the universe at Sanpark's Golden Gate National Park's Mountain Retreat.

Motoring editor Henrie Geyser gets seduced with French flair by the newish Renault Fluence, while foodie contributor Nina Timm shares her favourite springtime recipe.

New competitions this week include two tickets to Lucy Kruger's album launch at Mercury Live, and to the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra's production of "All you wanted to know about the orchestra but were too afraid to ask" at Cape Town's Fugard Theatre.

Happy Tuesday!

Vindaba: Year one of a new tourism exhibition concept
[Susannah Holz] Wine and gourmet tourism is a trending travel category worldwide, but per capita spend is unevenly distributed amongst wine-growing regions. Napa Valley in California, for example, earns USD188 a head whereas the Western Cape is currently earning USD41 per head. This huge potential for growth must be unlocked for the greater benefit of our wine and tourism industries as well as the communities they support. Read more >>

Springtime - strawberry time!
[Nina Timm] Yes, spring is finally here and it is wonderful to be woken up by the birds every morning. It is not quite light when I wake up (5-ish) so my early-morning coffee in the garden will still have to wait for another week or so, but, nevertheless, it is time to spring-clean the house, body and soul. Fluence oozes French flair
[Henrie Geyser: motoring editor] After a rather slow, stuttering sales start the Renault Fluence has picked up market speed and is now one of French's brand's three best sellers in this country - and with more than enough reason because it is a well-specced family sedan, pleasant to drive, nice looking and devoid of the quirks one has become accustomed to with some French and Italian cars. Take the gap at the Gate
[Brian Berkman: contributing editor, travel] You've heard the cliché about having a bird's eye view and I'm sure you agree how overused it is. Until now - I can honestly describe our view, from SanPark's Golden Gate National Park's Mountain Retreat as bird's eye as the bearded vultures are flying lower than our perch, precipitously wedged into the mountain, at the top of an impossibly steep road. [10 Things I Love About...] Working in the luxury hospitality industry
[Brian Berkman: contributing editor, travel] Brian Berkman, Contributing Travel Editor, had a chat to Gaby Gramm, Graham Beck hospitality manager For Steenberg (Voted by Condé Nast Traveler US on its 2012 Gold List as one of the Top 500 Experiences in the World). He asked her what are her 10 things she loves about working in the luxury hospitality industry. A great deal, it seems. Read more >>

On and off the Bench
[Eugene Yiga] Two petty thieves are planning one last job so that they can finally retire. But there's a twist on what could easily have turned into a rehash of every heist movie ever made. One of the guys starts having doubts about their latest scam. Can he go through with it or is it better for them to walk away? Read more >>

Biko's Quest
We have heard the new-age adage "less is more". This is surely the case with this amazing production about a man who is remembered for his teachings, a man of many words. Biko's Quest is a portrayal of the life and death of one of South Africa's political martyrs, Steve Bantu Biko. It draws its original work from the Steve Biko Foundation's exhibition: "Biko's Quest - for a True Humanity". It translates photography into dance, song and performance. Read more >>
