The emergence of CMC slang on a rather grand scale can be argued to be attributed to cell phone usage. If you think about it, far more people had access to a cell phone than the internet or IRC.

Of course there was email, but email was not designed to be written in SMS format. Hence, email had to be influenced somehow, perhaps through both SMS and forums such as IRC where CMC was prevalent.

Yes, CMC is an academic term. This article is based on my Honours dissertation.

[Michelle Mardon] Today, the role that technology plays in influencing the manner in which South African brands communicate with their target audiences is enormous. The obvious reasons include fast and convenient marketing message transmission through a multitude of technological platforms such as e-mail, social networks, websites, YouTube etc.
