I enjoyed getting two different professional perspectives on the payment issue, both very realistic and balanced - and I completely agree with Jo in that, 'If you go for a massage or buy something in a shop, you pay for it immediately, so why should this be any different?'
The advice offered also confirmed for me that, especially as a freelancer, it is vital to put into place a fair value on our services - both financial and in terms of mutually fair work/payment structures - and then politely but firmly 'stick to one's guns'. It may sometimes mean losing a client or two (and them losing out on your fantastic service!), but the long-term gains are healthy cash-flow, work satisfaction and ultimately mutually respectful working relationships with that stable of 'new, lovely clients'. ;-) |
