Crime, crime, crime and the political response is a kneejerk or a futile over-reaction. SA's problems are primarily social - the loss of real Ubuntu and leadership that chases the gravy train rather than leads.

It's sad that one of the most popular pages for international visitors in a tourism website is the one on public safety - http://capeinfo.com/crime-public-safety.
