Let me first admit two things: 1. I'm a groomer. Big time. I polish. I wax. I whiten and straighten and tweak. 2. I do a fair chunk of this at Sorbet salons, making me what they call a 'guest'...

I think Coca Cola's 2020 Vision sums up nicely what accountability is all about: "If it is to be, it's up to me". In the words of Ghandi, "be the change you want to see in the world". The sad reality, however, is that there are too many spectators pointing fingers from the sidelines about all that's wrong with the world. And, in South Africa especially, there exists a sense of entitlement that undermines the idea of doing what is best and right for the communities and businesses in which we operate.

In South Africa, brand pages on social networks are undergoing an evolution. What began as me-too mania as they all flocked to platforms like Facebook and Twitter simply because everyone was doing it, is now slowly becoming a far more nuanced and strategic understanding of the role these platforms can play in a broader communications strategy.
It's that time of the year again, when a lot of corporates go out to give Christmas parcels to the needy. They give away food parcels, clothes, toys and school uniforms, fix schools, donate funds and everything in between. They task their PR agencies to create publicity around this razzmatazz and the agency gets measured on how much publicity they got. And if the CEOs get to be interviewed on one or all the morning TV shows, they are sure as hell keeping the account for another year.

Marketing directors and CMOs have experienced a decade of rapid change, thanks in part to the explosion of digital media and digital technology. While this wave of change has included the dramatic ascent of mobile and social media, I believe there's far more radical change to come. Change that will directly affect the way agencies and brands work together to answer the needs of the digitally enabled consumer. What I'm expecting to see is a dramatic redefinition of marketing and the role of the marketing professional.

Why has Jenna Lowe asked us to help her #GetMeTo21? It's been all over social media lately, but so has everything else, so little surprise if you're not aware of the dire organ donation situation in SA...
