cureent state of primetime radio shows in south africa
PUBLIC RADIO SCENE:
looking at ukhozi fm, the departure of dj sbu came as a blessing in gisguise as the man is entirely out of touch with ukhozi fm`s core audience. linda sibiya ang his sidekick are on point and understand their market. ukhozis drivetime is a mass though. nuff said

on umhlobo wenene, slyso needs to retire. his show is too fatigued and is not receptive to new listeners. kci left an unquenchable void on the drivetime. i do not know who said that public radio djs should scream, cry and yell out of their lungs to deliver a kick-ass show. but all these drivetime hosts seem to do that, hence they will never crack the sophisticatd higher LSM groupings at all.

TALK RADIO
John robbie of 702 is at the epitome of what punchline talk radio is all about. Keno kamiz is good but sometimes he tries too much.

sakina kimwendo constantly has a point to prove which sometimes blurs her delivery. otherwise she is up there.

Eric Miyeni is proving to have been deserving of his slot at SAfm and his direct on-air competitors should be feeling the pinch in no time.

COMMERCIAL RADIO:
dj sbu will single handedly resuscitate Yfm`s breakfast show. dnt know about the stations tattered profile though...
thomas, ur clock is ticking, move out of the comfort zone and start delivering good radio.
gareth, is untouchable. fresh as well. chilli m is a joke, no content, all laughs, perverty, whats the point?
jeremy mansfield continues to kick serious butt and is raking in the numbers in the process.
unathi and glenn just dont work. metro also needs to review their monotonous , out-dated playlist.
phat joe has jelled well at khaya and will retain the alredy existant audience but there are no fireworks so far.

one of the TOP 10 HIhGEST PAID radio jocks in no particular order:
a) dj fresh ( fresh drive )
b) dj sbu ( soon to host yfm breakfast )
c) gareth ( 5fm )
d) mansfield ( highveld
e) glenn lewis
f) john robbie ( 702 and cape talk )
i can ascertain that all the above mentioned jocks earn no less than 50grand a month and dj sbu left ukhozi fm standing at 65grand. mind to guess how much yfm put on the table to get him back???? the man is smiling all the way to the bank and will raise the listenership figuers like it is no body`s business.

how nutnbrained!!!!!!!-
whoever wrote the above knows radio. i feel u on the sbu saga. the man is a nice shake up to the currently borind commercial radio breakfadst shows Posted on 5 May 2008 18:34
dj salaries-
mansfiled still remains the highest paid radio dj on the local scene. the guy was earning R1M in 2000 so you can imagine what he is raking in right now.

glen lewis is also ranked high up there, was pulling in R70K in 2006 so you can imagine.

id say the standings right now are:

1. Mansfield (R150K)
2. Alex Jay (R100K)
3. Glen lewis (R80K)
4. Fresh (R80K)
5. Gareth Cliff (R70K)
6. DJ Sbu (R60K)
7. Phat Joe (R60K)
8. Bad Boy (R60K) Posted on 6 May 2008 16:47

darren scott-
What about Darren Scott?

He flies between Durban and Joburg daily in his private jet.

...a tiny jet costs R10k an hour to run, never mind airport fees etc. How much must he be earning to justify two to three hours of flying every day? Posted on 7 May 2008 16:34
Darren Scott does his show from Jo'burg-
Darren Scott does his afternoon show on East Coast Radio from Johannesburg.Did you really think he flies between Jo'burg and Durban daily? Posted on 8 May 2008 17:30
No he doesn't-
Not according to a PR piece on TV the other day anyway. Posted on 9 May 2008 12:14
just plain jet-
yes darren flies between jhb and dbn everyday Posted on 16 May 2008 01:24
how do you know?-
how do you know what these people are earning? Posted on 8 May 2008 16:53
Shobza
What about Marawa?-
Guys, I don't see Robert Marawa on this list does that mean Bad Boy & Glen earn more than him?Robert's show is so big I think its the biggest in SA even the other stations know that.SABS tried to fire him last year but it didn't work,I wonder what changed their minds was it the listeners'complaints or may be they also know that the show will die without like the SoccerZone on SABC 1 they can't even get a sponsor MTN pulled out when SABC failed to lure Marawa back.I really think he should be among the Top 10 earners in SA Radio. The thing about radio...-
Radio is a fickle medium. I'm at an age where I don't like listening to Yfm and I just never switch the dial. The last time I listened to Y was when Fresh did the morning show and as far as I am concerned It will never be the same. Besides, I hate Sbu's -I-NEED-TO-COUGH-VOICE.

Since Fresh left I started listening to Aza in the morning on Metro and I seriously love Metro - Thomas rocks the morning slot - you won't believe the number of people I pass in the morning and afternoon singing along to the same songs I am. NUFF SAID.

I didn't follow Fresh to 5 cause 5 just ain't my thing - I mean I like black people to sound black - and Poppy, Mlu and Elana are just not that black - so I'll pass. I like kwaito, house rnb and hip-hop not mixed with rock - thank you very much.

Quite frankly, I don't care how much DJ's earn - it doesn't make them a better presenter.

By the way - next time you feel the urge to express your opinion on a public forum like this - you might want to do a spell check! I like black people to be able to spell - afteralll we did so many spelling tests at our township schools. Posted on 13 May 2008 09:36
Black
Black people to sound black-
You are so ignorant , what is sounding black and what is sounding white , you still stuck in the days of what separate us . Fool ! Posted on 17 May 2008 11:17
No, you are the one stuck in the past!-
What I mean is that yes, our parents paid money for us to go to better schools but that doesn't mean we have to sound white to pass. Speak the English but don't change your accent.

BTW, do not resort to name calling, I'm sure you were taught better than that! Posted on 21 May 2008 10:09
Shoooo Black-
You still didn't bother spell checking when insulting the other scribe. Commas and periods come just after your last word, like this, and not after a space . No. You took the black race back 10 steps with your name calling and lack of grammar skills - placing a punctuation mark in the right place - Standard 1.

You know, people only resort to name calling when they have nothing intelligent to say. Don't embarrass yourself, don't respond - lest you make another grammatical error. Posted on 21 May 2008 10:17

PERIODS???-
How can you pretend to be all knowledgable about punctuation and then use an American word like period instead of gull stop? This is not America. Thank goodness. Posted on 27 May 2008 17:16

U suck!!-

stop these nonsense of telling people how to spell, i believe you have writing issues so this is not the right forum to raise your problem. as long as you understand what i'm saying then it's fine by me. Posted on 22 Sep 2008 09:54
