Does the return of Phat Joe pose a threat to the current black radio DJs?

25 Feb 2008 21:1028 commentsBizLike
Radio, particularly black radio, is said to be doing a complete 360º turn this April.
It's been reported that radio stations are gearing themselves up for what has been seen, by many who follow the radio industry, as the return of the giants, literally.

1. S'bu is tipped to do breakfast on Y, I suppose he has unfinished business.

2. Phat Joe is rumoured to take care of business in the morning on Kaya FM.

3.Just Ice is back in Jozi after a failed attempt at resuscitating his radio career at Durban's Gagasi FM. He's originally supposed to do breakfast at Kaya FM but with the likes of Majota said to come back, it remains to be seen what will come of the station's new line up.

4. All the black radio DJs who are currently hosting prime time slots have another thing coming. I don't think that they would've shone, had the likes of Bob and Phat Joe stayed in radio a couple of years ago.

5. Now, these DJs are hogging the airwaves (Glenzito pops into my mind at this stage) hindering young talent from shining. Oh how they forget (conveniently) that they'll be replaced and forgotten in no time.

6. Remember Gillman? Or Tich?

7. Everyone is replacable.

What are you talking about? Pose a threat, come on.-
Need I remind you that Phat Joe failed dismally at metro. If you were listening, he was clearly a shadow of his former self. I don't think the return of Phat Joe poses any threat. If he returns (pure speculation on your part), he will have to work from the ground up again. I don't think Kaya will take the risk. It's evident as things stand that Just Ice has been recruited for breakfast. Frankly I prefer Ice than Joe.

The same can be said for Bob, he did not quite crack it at Highveld towards the latter part of his on air career. Bob is an executive at the Sabc now, I don't see him adorning head phones again. You concede in your post that the present dj's hogging airtime will sooner or later be replaced and forgotten. The same happened to Bob and Phat Joe, they have been replaced and forgotten. Your rule should apply to them also. Much like Glenzito needs to go, Joe and Bob need to stay gone.

Your question should have been a hypathetic one and hypatheticlly speaking I don't think the return of Phat Joe poses any threat to black jocks. For anyone to pose a threat, they have to be a new comer, a rare talent. Frankly, South African radio has a long way to go before we get to this point. The reason for this, is that non of these radio bosses want to invest in any new talent, (understandably because radio is about profits and margins)instead they recycle. Posted on 26 Feb 2008 18:50

3 months later-
And what do we say about Joe now. Started well but his crew sucks and Kaya is too matured for him. Infact morning Radio is all just boring. Sbu is not cracking it too on his unfinished biznes. Posted on 10 Jun 2008 18:08

radio-
i dont think it poses a threat to radio the question is what is he bringing because raio has changed and it not only about listeners its also about advertisers...what value is he bringing to advertisers?

kaya being an adult station are its listeners ready for him?will they appreciate his jokes?
has he grown into a better matured presenter? Posted on 27 Feb 2008 18:28
Phat Joe a threat?-

What is a threat kanti?-
c'mon guyz Phat Joe's content is not socially acceptable, thats why he got fired by SABC. I think he is a threat to whoever is hiring him. No offence but the guy will drop the numbers, mark my words Posted on 29 Feb 2008 12:50

Phat Joe a threat?-
Guys,I think we r all getting excited over nothing. If Jojo were to make a come back @ Kaya we'll have to give him a chance and listen to what he has to offer.I wouldn't write him off yet given the lack of talent in the industry since he left the airwaves 6 years ago. I think the only DJ/presenter who has shone so far is Sbu, so maybe he still stands a chance if he were to come back. As for Ice I don't like what I hear on weekend breakfast @ Kaya,I think he has lost his touch that's why he failed in Durban's Gagasi fm. Posted on 3 Mar 2008 13:00

I'm 100% in agreement-
Contentiously, nobody does radio better than Phat Joe at least by far. I don't even think he was fired from SABC because of incompetence, but apparently because of constantly disregarding and challenging decisions of SABC management, for example his frequent absenteesims from general DJ meetings. All in all, I am awaiting excellence and impeccability at best on the airwaves with the return of the main man. To answer your question, I think Phat Joe has no competition given the general poor quality of young DJs, and the dullness of breakfast shows in most radio stations that are operating on local, regional and national levels. Hence, he is indeed a threat to many young DJs most of whom simply don't know what they are doing behind mics. Posted on 4 Mar 2008 15:59
the jojos-
finally black radio has someone to rescue us from all this crap we listen to on a daily basis. Yfm better get Sbu back or else this will be the final nail in their coffin.

to answer your question, yes his return does pose a threat to other morning jocks simply because no one is performing at the moment. Posted on 4 Mar 2008 18:46
The return of the prodigal son-
I hope he's grown up and matured enough to fit in with the Kaya audience.
And NO Phat Joe is not a threat to black radio. He has a lot to prove bcoz black people are not tied to black radio stations anymore. They listen to the likes of Gareth Cliff, Jeremy Mansfield and John Robbie in the morning. Posted on 5 Mar 2008 18:53
Phat Joe at threat - you've gotta be joking-
Phat Joe is no threat to anyone. He failed dismally at Metro. Why there's so much hype around his I'll never understand, the man is hugely over rated. Granted, he has talent, but unless he changes his attitude towards his employers and colleagues he will fail again.

Kaya are taking a huge gamble. I think Ice would have been a better gamble. Will they live to regret it? Time will tell Posted on 5 Mar 2008 05:51

leave the Jo jo alone-
I am very much disturbed by people who have written the Jo JO OUT.Phate Joe will rise above occassion and shine as he did previosly. He is creative and funny and that is all we want from breakfast host.Last time i enjoyed breakfast show it was during Khabzela when he took over from equally crazy Joe.
Welcome to Phat Joe Radio Mkhaya Posted on 5 Mar 2008 14:40
PHAT JOE-
I think the PHAT ONE still has a lot to offer.I use to listen to his shows on suterdays when YFM started and when he replaced SAMMY T for the the morning show. This man is powerfull and his jokes Bafowethu nne ke laga blind.PHAT JOE rocks.Well come back PHAT ONE. Posted on 6 Mar 2008 16:52

For better or for worse, time will tell-
While I battle to tune in to a certain radio station this morning on my mobile phone, the feedback I get before I reach the actual station is horrendous! I’m saying this in light of Kaya FM’s brave or rather innovative change next Monday! Hopefully when my dial & many other’s hits 95.9 KHz on Monday we don’t go through the same experience. On that, couldn’t help think that maybe & just maybe Ms Deacon is leaving because the powers that be(share holders, etc) wanted ‘Phat Joe’ & she didn’t! I mean why would you work so hard all these years & let it go like that? Yes, they all claim to leave while they still at their peak… but this ain’t an example of that! Surely the must be a valid reason. Also, her management style is evident in some of the DJ’s, from Live & switched on(the original one with Pat & Ed, not this now defunt crap), the brilliant midday hosts T-Bose & Georgie & then the rather ageing Mr L Dube(he must be next in line)… doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see there’s a similarity not only in gender & race but in their style(presentation & otherwise) & a few others. Now you take that & mirror it with ‘Phat Joe’! Perfect picture of the up&down waves of a patient struggling for his/her life in a life support machine. Don’t get me wrong, I’m waiting with bated breath for the new change on Monday! Kaya FM is the future sound, the kind of station I’d want to listen to in my mid thirties. The direction & decisions the station takes ofcourse will determine where & who will be listening to it 5-7yrs from now. My one & only hope is that in pursuit of profit & the most number of listernership they don’t compromise on their quality, the one critical factor that sets it apart from the rest & makes it what it is today. Phat Joe is the MAN-
Okay,I think the reason Phat Joe failed at Metro was because SABC is a public broadcaster therefore he was very limited in the type of things he could do, he ended up being frustrated and left the station. He always got into trouble.

Kaya FM is a indie station like YFM, so he will be unrestricted. Remember the days of Dr. du Plessis that concept has been copied and Live and Switched On had Dr. StrangeLove and Dr. Bra Joe.

Before Joe did breakfast at YFM, a lot of breakfast shows only had the host/DJ as the only voice on air (e.g. Glen Lewis) and then Joe came out with his team on air, Dadaman,David Kau,Carlito,Leo and boy oh boy the show was totally out of this world.

Phat Joe I cant wait for you to monopolize the airwaves once more, Kaya FM realised that people who used to listen to you in the 90s have outgrown YFM and now they want them to move to Kaya.

Go on represent Maftown! Posted on 8 Mar 2008 06:34

Well Done to Kaya FM for bringing back the JoJo.. Breakfast radio will never be the same again...the current crop of black radio DJs especially the breakfast show teams are a big disappointment.

Phat Phat Phat Phat Phat Joe-
He is the best of the best of the very best of the best. Whatever he did or does had never been done. Even the music he played on metro revolutionazed the metro fm playlist until he left and metro started repeating old songs more. Live on the legend/icon. Phat Joe till I die. I think Phat Joe wilkl be very good for radio right now. i have worked with him and he is creative and talented. I think he may have matured a bit in certain aspects and will be likely to look after his job.

The man is a crystal that will continue glooming forever-
Phat Joe made his make way back as a DJ for several radio stations, and he worked and succeeded under depressive and limited conditions that he faced then. Now that he has joined the famous and civilised Kaya FM radio station, I am conviced he will bring vibes that will be engraved in many people's minds and heart for centuries to come. Give the man the opportunity to breathe and stretch his wings in bringing a change in our lives. Recently he embarked on a risk-taken task of organising a massive wedding for strangers, and it paid dividends as anticipated by millon Kaya listernes and sundry. Phat Joe continue with your expertise for the good of the nation and the society at large. Surely this will eventually shift people's minds from xenophobia mentality to a rational and mutual socity in our lovely South Africa. George Mgeorgo Posted on 13 Jun 2008 09:06

tich-
please come on dont compare phat joe with tich. the guy was the greatest dj he inspired many young djs that are on the airwaves today. mataz was great even if he was a zimbabwean talent was there.remember he was the 1st black dj to join 5fm he opened doors for many. in fact all the zimbabeans that i have listened to were good. eg bertha charuma, george munetsi, alice chavenduka (was the 1st black woman to read english news) sammy t who was on yfm Posted on 5 Jul 2008 00:21

y we gotta compare-
we should stop comparing there is only one phat joe one dj sbu so lets just enjoy what they have to offer.i stopped listening to dj sbu because i feel that he only caters for a specific kind of black person ( batho ba ko kasi) and i dont quite fit into that box, secondly, his arrogance just gets to me,thirdly, when you listen to joe's show he never mentions sbu's name, joe is just doing his thing his crew might be a bit boring but hey its still working so lets just enjoy the talent that south african radio has offered we have the right to change radio stations if a certain dj is boring us as for phat joe being a threat i dont think so, no one is better than the other purely because we are all different beings who have been blessed with different gifts............ He is phenomenon-
For many of us we were young when joe rocked, now we're older and we thinking "we're the internet generation now, the sandton lot, we'll he reach us? well, he's up there with the cream of mzansi; remember the phat joe production its huge now on some BEE tip (phat joe holdings); he may not have been available for us to see him or making media headlines but he's grown, he's a successful businessman - a brand that remained consistent over the years. we speak English now, some of my mates are journos even; but damn, he's still flauless and informative - which is exacatly what we need aspiration. So yeh say whatever but uncle joe is HOT and the clip on his show with the child saying "you're listening to my daddy"??? Joe is rockers bro, big ups. He is real, ideal, like ur eddie murphy's and the Will Smith's of this world. Gonale batho bajwalo you know? consistent. DJ Sbu, ooh hot also on a kasi tip - pushing the mentality to the rest of the world hot hot hot!!! Posted on 9 Oct 2008 12:11
