World Press Freedom Day - no big celebration in SA - 6 May 2013

By Ilse van den Berg, @Biz_Marketing

World Press Freedom Day - no big celebration in SA - Mon, 06 May 2013World Press Freedom Day, established 20 years ago, was celebrated around the globe last Friday. In South Africa, however, freedom of the press has been quite the touchy subject due to the proposed Protection of Information Bill which is awaiting being signed into law by President Jacob Zuma.

With the voting process on the POIB recently, some glitches included a vote being recorded for a former MP who hasn't actually been in Parliament for a while, and a few who also weren't even there for the vote. To make this even worse, five MPs who weren't even in the place at the time were recorded as voting against the bill... Just to put this in perspective, the vote is on a bill that provides for draconian punishments for those reporters, editors and even members of the public who may be deemed to have crossed the line in exposing corruption etc - the bill actually provides for longer sentences than some murderers have received for brutal killings, so surely it's imperative that the voting system should work properly?

In other news, it is advised that you familiarise yourself with the Ombud process, which will reportedly make you feel safe and empowered in the knowledge that if anything goes wrong, there is an Ombudsman ready to hear your case and resolve disputes whether it be with a financial service provider, retailer or cell phone service provider (I could write a book on this one...)

Chemory Gunko explains more about the anatomy of a logo and suggests that there are a few things to consider before signing off on that near perfect logo you've had commissioned.

And last, but never the least, make sure you listen to the podcast of our 60th Biz Takeouts episode which focused on digital marketing agency, Quirk.
