That infernal spear - 28 May 2012

By Rod Baker, Content Director

Top of the news this week, and last week, of course, has been "The Spear", the controversial painting of Jacob Zuma that has been the topic of conversation and top of mind. The ANC called for a boycott of City Press, which, apparently, in some areas, led people to buy the paper; nevertheless, Ferial Haffajee has announced that the image of the painting will be removed from its website.

Whether or not that does the trick is yet to be seen, because the ANC has also called for a City Press ad boycott.

Still on "The Spear", eNews has rejected "with contempt" an accusation on the part of the government that the channel was censoring itself when it did not show video footage of Advocate Gcina Malindi breaking down in tears during court proceedings.

Meanwhile, financial print media are lobbying the JSE on its proposed publishing rules, which the media reckon could cripple newspapers.
