Tsotsi a box office hit

There will be many on tenderhooks on Sunday night/Monday morning when the Oscars are announced, 6 March 2006, no more so than all those involved in the South African Foreign Film category nomination: Tsotsi. After four weeks, South African drama, Tsotsi, has grossed over R2.5 million on the local circuit. It maintained its position on the SA Top 10 and held onto its number 3 position on the Cinema Nouveau circuit.

Miramax released Tsotsi in the United States last week and the UK release is scheduled for mid March 2006.

Audiences and critics across three continents have given the film a huge thumbs up. This is evidenced in its amazing run of nine international awards. It was also the first South African film to receive a Golden Globe and two Bafta nominations.

With the Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category, all of South Africa is now holding its breath in anticipation of bringing home another golden statuette on 6 March 2006.

The Academy Awards ceremony will be broadcast live at Emperors Palace Monsoon Lagoon in Gauteng on 6 March from 3am.
