New kid's newspaper on the block

4 Jun 2008 09:0015 commentsBizLike
A child of five can already recognise up to 300 logos - and a question for marketers is, “Is my logo one of them?” Launching shortly is an interactive tabloid for six-year-olds, My First Free 4 All. Direct from the Free 4 All stable, it is the baby brother of high school newspaper Free 4 All, and its sibling for senior primary school kids, Free 4 All Early Edition.
The first issue will be distributed to 185 schools in the main metros in June 2008. Every child in Grade 0 at participating schools will receive their own copy to take home.

The fledgling title is in line with the thinking of the minister of education Naledi Pandor, who says that “Grade 0 is the golden year - the year that defines whether the child will be functionally literate.” This is the year when the child learns to read, so he can later read to learn. Together with the emphasis on learning to read at a younger age is the trend to build brand recognition and especially brand loyalty at an earlier age.

Seu Comber, a former language teacher, says that only high-interest material encourages a child to read. That's why every page in all Free 4 All publications is designed to help foster a love for reading and writing, thus helping to combat illiteracy. Many pages are sponsored by companies ranging from nutritional foods to educational toys. These are colourful, interactive worksheets that the child can work through either at school under the care of a class teacher, at home alone, or together with their mothers and fathers.

Excellent!-
My daughter is in Grade 5 and she actually reads a NEWSPAPER! I know whenever she gets her Free 4 All because she buries her head in it for hours. I look at it too (when she eventually lets it go) and I even enjoy it at my age. My son is in Grade R at the moment and I would like to get him excited about newspapers at this young age, before he gets sucked into the opinion that newspapers are boring and only for "old people". It is difficult to reverse this kind of thinking. I would like to commend Free 4 All for taking this initiative and making such a positive imprint on the lives of our future generations. I agree, our kids needs to learn and love literature and to also absorb it themeselves - and us as parents should encourage them to reading for fun as young as they are - because we don't want to breed couch potatoes stuck watching all of Dstv kiddies channels and dvd's ...

it's a great move! biggups! Posted on 12 Jun 2008 17:08
Kids magazine market overtraded?-
I work in the marketing department in a school in Kwazulu Natal and we are constantly inundated with advertising opportunities in various kids publications. Do you not think that this market it overtraded? Currently the following publications are in our area: Durban’s Child, Pre- and Primary School, Edu-Magazine, Moms Mail, Junior Mag to name some. What is this publication offering that is different?

This is for the kids themselves.-
MY First FREE 4 ALL is part of a larger initiative to encourage children to read. Unlike those mentioned - this publication is for the children themselves. It is bright, interactive and fun. There is a sense of pride and ‘ownership’ as each child gets their very own to look at and interact with.
Content is critical for the development at this age - so it includes the following: colour, number and word recognition. Colouring, tracing, spelling, spot the differences etc etc
There are stars as an insert and the mother/father is asked to reward the child as each activity is completed.
If this publication is used correctly by the nurturer - we could possibly have children who have a positive feeling about the written word. They will learn to read so that they can read to learn! Posted on 17 Jun 2008 13:24

Free for all Magazine-
This is a perfect magazine for kids. This is a magazine which should be distributed at the Toll Gates nationaly. It would give those kids traveling and opportunity to be bussy and keep them from being bored to death with long journeys they take when going on holiday. Its a good way to create awareness of the magazine. Call Veronica Gow 011 478 5477
