This initiative will see a total of 1000 trees planted in all the participating municipalities leading up to the World Cup. The focus of this legacy initiative is also to educate the various communities and youth about key botanical trees, positive aspects of trees, such as the improvement in the quality of the air we breathe, and their nourishing and shelter component.

The first tree was planted during the SABC 500 day's milestone celebrations at the SABC and the last tree will be planted on the first day of the 2010 World Cup.

“We hope that it would encourage the public to take care of their environment and to preserve our heritage,” says 2010 general manager, Peter Kwele.

Five trees will be planted at the Mhulizi stadium in Middleburg, Mpumalanga; Vryburg Showgrounds, North West; Comfimvaba Stadium, Port St John's, Eastern Cape; the Marburg Sports Ground in KwaZulu-Natal, and during the forthcoming Nelson Mandela Challenge on 28 March 2009 at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.
