Local music campaign continues on SABC radio

Waya Waya, the SABC's 100% local music campaign, will be extended until the end of September 2010 following its successful three months over the 2010 FIFA World Cup period. The organisation announced this on 30 July 2010, adding that the campaign would form part of celebrating Heritage Month in September.

"Our public broadcast service (PBS) radio stations have reached the target of 85% SA local music and 15% African continental music as planned. We will at the end of the campaign in September 2010 evaluate the campaign and report back to our listeners. We thank our listeners for their support and encourage them to continue tuning into our platforms," said SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago.

The campaign was initially in line with the theme of the World Cup being an African World Cup. The corporate goals of the SABC indicate a special mention of promoting the African Renaissance and NEPAD and this can be done in various forms such as music, arts and culture. The African Broadcasters' Association of which the SABC is chair had as one of its goals the promotion of development and democracy as legacies of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
