Any more marketing opportunities from crime situation?

13 Oct 2009 11:459 commentsBizLike
Apart from being held to ransom by security and insurance companies, are there any more marketing opportunities in the crime situation? Well, I think there is at least one big one and it all has to do with these car guards we now see at every single shopping centre.
It was a brilliant concept, let's face it, when someone suggested that we should start looking at our safety when we popped down to the local shops to pick up the paper, a loaf of bread and a litre of milk.

Victim of security

So, they got a whole lot of unemployed people, swore them in as deputies, gave them t-shirts and told them to look after our cars in exchange for tips.

Great idea and it worked well, I thought.

Then it dawned on me that, apart from being a victim of crime, I was now well and truly a victim of security. I was being had. The buck was being passed and I was at the receiving end.

Because what the shopkeepers were telling me that they not only wanted my custom, my money but that they were going to contribute precisely sod-all to ensuring that I could do all this in relative safety.

I'm getting sick of it and I'm sure I'm not alone and what this boils down to is a wonderful marketing opportunity for those shopkeepers, hotel owners, parking garage operators who are being told by people like me that “if you want our patronage, then you are going to have to start assuring us that our cars are not going to get ripped off. You are going to have to start paying those t-shirted fellows to look after our cars. You are going to have to stop having your bread buttered on both sides.”

Passing the buck

Surely it is not unreasonable to expect shopkeepers to do something about the safety of their customers and not just pass the buck?

In Cape Town a while back, I pulled in to the parking lot of an hotel. A wonderful hotel with equally wonderful service. Everything absolutely perfect. Except that as I drove in to the parking lot there was a huge sign telling me that if I wanted to be fool enough to park my car there, then I should not even dream about whinging if it got broken in to, damaged or stolen.

Well, that's how I read it. What it actually said was that standard: “Management bears no responsibility for loss or theft etc.”

On the basis that first impressions are lasting impressions - despite the fact that this was a great hotel - that first impression teed me off no end.

Living in hope

Hopefully, as South Africa moves closer to a free market economy and competition begins to bite, we will start seeing some really creative marketing from hotels, shopping centres and parking garages.

Creative marketing in the form of big signs that say: “Welcome, your car is quite safe with us.”

And perhaps: “Please don't tip the parking lot guards, we pay them fat salaries to look after your car.”

Of course, I'm not that naïve as to think that those costs won't be passed onto the consumer. They will, but only until competition gets even tougher and, in addition to having to pay for parking security, the shopkeepers will have to start cutting prices as a further and completely natural, enticement to increase custom.

Right. Now, who's first? You'll get my business that's for sure.

Yes, yes, yes!-
Property owners make more money charging for parking than for premises rental and to add insult to injury still populate the parking lot with car guards expecting a "donation." Posted on 13 Oct 2009 13:53
Couldn't agree more.-
As usual in South Africa, you must just pay! Car guards are a legalised form of begging. I have yet to actually be shown an empty spot by a so called car guard. But are they there helping 'show you out' when you leave, with a hand out for a nice tip from Big Boss, The Captain, Number 1 Boss, whatever patronising name they can think of to help their cause. I see single women succumbing to this pressure. Stop doing it, and hopefully they will all go away. Don't allow yourselves to become victims of this scam. And the stories that if you don't pay, next time your car will be broken into are just urban legends that should be taken as just that.

And while on the subject of scams. The business of paying for plastic bags at supermarkets falls into the very same category. Supermarkets, do you want my custom? Then cut the crap with this making us pay for stupid shopping bags. The government dropped the tax ages ago. Does paying for them have any effect on litering? Hell no. I find it offensive that supermarkets are not prepared to give me a bag (that costs them 0.0010 of a cent to produce - and they have the offrontery to charge 20 cents for, see my point!) for free. I am giving you my custom. I should charge you for my time and effort! It is the same logic track! Posted on 13 Oct 2009 15:52

Stand toghether ??-
Nice article, there is just one flaw, the general SA citizen.... Seems everyone that still earns a reputable living, would rather pay up than to speak up, let's rather make it someone else's problem.....

Sigh, will the general South African ever change their way of thinking ..... Posted on 13 Oct 2009 16:09
Some shopping centers are doing this-
It is interesting to see that there are two in Stellenbosch (at the Super Spars) that have parking and no car guards - there is visible security but they manage the whole parking area and don't ask for tips. Added to that the parking is free, makes me want to shop there. Posted on 13 Oct 2009 16:15

Chris Moerdyk - Car guards-
Chris - A while ago I did a bit of research on the situation of the car guards.
It appears that there are numerous shopping centres where there is mainly outdoor parking where the car guards have to pay the shops a sum of money per day - this ranges from R10 - R30 for the privilege of working there. They also have to purchase the luminous jackets that they wear.
It seems to me that they need to get a hang of a lot of money from parkers in order to meet their upfront costs before they manke a penny.
Do you have any information on which shops actually pay "fat salaries"? I will certainly give you the benefit of the doubt yet your infomation and mine is at odds!
As for paying a fat sum when just poppling in for milk and bread - I try to give along a sliding scale that gives a few cents for a few minutes and more according to how long I have stayed there. It also helps me as an elderly person that the guards almost always help me push my heavy trolley, pack the bags into my boot and guide me out of the parking bay.
If they are receiving fat salaries I agree with you. If not, I would rather give them something than pay the huge parking fees at a place like Cavendish Square (R6 for an hour and R10 for a couple of hours) - and as for the cost of parking at the airport....!! Posted on 13 Oct 2009 16:33

Nothing but a third world tax-
Car guards have no value, if something happens to your car they take absolutely no responsibilities. The shopping centers are covered by their indemnity signs.

This is nothing more than organized begging and a third world tax. Posted on 13 Oct 2009 18:19

GRRR!-
I TOTALLY agree...it bugs the c$%p out of me that I have to get ushered into a parking space as though I am blind and can't pick an empty spot out of a line-up then in BROAD DAYLIGHT I need to pay someone for the privilege of looking after my car!!!!

I base my shopping center decisions on who doesn't have this 'service'... Posted on 14 Oct 2009 09:54

car guards-
Took the words out of my mouth.
Consider also that each (mostly) parking lot is illegally (I think) hired out by city officials to the head car guard who has to pay a monthly probably exorbitant fee to that person to run the operation. Exploitation of the poor as well as the consumer!! Posted on 20 Oct 2009 13:35
