Brand Zille - from brilliant marketer to mad madam

13 May 2009 15:3534 commentsBizLike
What on earth has happened to Brand Zille? Only a year ago I was talking about her as one of South Africa's leading natural-born marketers but right now I get the feeling that she has ditched a lot of the successful strategy that put her where she is.
Perhaps she is still in election mode and hasn't found her reset button or, has she perhaps become so swept up with political power and victory that it has affected her capacity to think clearly?

Making marketing mistakes

She is making marketing mistakes right, left and centre. The most important being how one should treat competitors. In marketing terms the best business practice is to be aware of what your competitors are doing but if they start doing really dumb things, don't follow suit by being equally as stupid. Understand what your competitors are up to, certainly, but it's a waste of time and effort to start publicly harping on and on about it. And, above all, don't get personal.

Now, I know politicians are supposed to speak out about opposition mistakes but Zille is making the mistake of becoming obsessive. And rising to the bait that her opposition is throwing at her.

For starters, the usually highly critical media that lambasted Zuma these past few years have changed their tack considerably. They have largely welcomed his inauguration speech, especially the part about teaching the ANC how to understand and deal with the opposition in a non-confrontational way. Sure, he will have to have a chat to Gwede Mantashe and the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) about the speed at which they have completely ignored him.

Even Zapiro saw it

But, Zille didn't read market sentiment properly. She effectively told Zuma to shove his olive branch. She seems to have ignored a largely reconciliatory stance by the media, even to the point of not noticing that cartoonist Zapiro had temporarily removed Zuma's showerhead.

Instead, she completely fell for the ANCYL's bait and flew into a tantrum about Zuma's sexual history. She hasn't seemed to have understood that her obsession with Zuma-bashing is not only bad marketing but bad politics. And, given the response to various radio talk shows recently, she's beginning to annoy her own constituency.

She has made the mistake of reducing herself to the level of her detractors. She has made the mistake - a massive marketing blunder - of not thinking ahead to the cause and effect of her actions. She knew there would be an outcry about her all-male cabinet but she doesn't seem to have planned any sort of credible response. She just told everyone in general to stop telling her what to do. So much for that little marketing adage about listening to your customers even if they are talking nonsense.

Distractions

She seems to have failed to understand that the ANCYL has a marketing strategy to disrupt its opposition in any way possible. That while it may well be puerile and illogical, it is working. It is baiting her and the more vociferously she responds, the more it claps its hands with joy. It is distracting her big-time.

But, getting back to her obsession with Zuma's background, if indeed she is going to ignore the reconciliatory olive branch he held out to opposition parties, she will be giving him the moral high ground.

It will also mean that she has learnt nothing from the past year or two. She will not have learnt that the ID's losses at the polls were the direct result of Patricia De Lille's obsession with the arms deal. Nothing wrong with that, except that voters got sick and tired of her harping on and on.

Obsession

And now, with Zuma as president for the next five years and with the most critical of media seemingly wanting to give him a chance to prove himself, Helen Zille is not going to achieve anything with her anti-Zuma obsession.

Mainly because the more obsessive she gets with Zuma and the ANCYL, the more distracted she will become from showing the whole of South Africa what the DA is capable of achieving.

Arrogance and obsession are not things that sit well in any marketing campaign. And there is no question that marketing is fast becoming a more and more important factor in politics.

Something that endeared the nation to Zille was when she was elected leader of the DA and showed such grace, dignity and humility when she was formally introduced to Thabo Mbeki.

That Zille has now been rebranded, it seems, into someone with very little grace, a snappy disposition and a somewhat arrogant "don't dare tell me what to do" attitude.

Barack Obama is a natural-born marketer, so too are Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Tutu, Jacob Zuma, Jake White and Trevor Manuel. Helen Zille used to be and it makes me wonder just what the hell has happened to her.

Spot on, Chris!-
How easy to undo what an enetire campaign set out to acheive - a show of leadership. It will take some clever footwork for Zille to wrangle out of this mess! Posted on 13 May 2009 16:51
The Zille Defender
Way off Chris - Is Chris perhaps getting to close to the ANC?-
Her brand positioning is God-Zille, and this is what we expect from her. Like the Helen before her, she is currently the lone standing woman dedicated to fighting for equality and justice, and in the face of Zuma and Malema, she too has to take on the stance that the Iron Lady did. If this calls for some tough stances on political issues, then so be it. Let us not forget that in her position, marketing is not her leading role - she has to get the job done, get results and ensure compliance - naturally, those who are only concerned with the perceptions will crit her less than 100% marketing approach.

Come on Chris. Surely you must see that there is more to politics than just marketing. Posted on 13 May 2009 17:58
Democracy defender
Hey Zille Defender, You are so brainless, it hurts-
I am amazed at Morons like Zille defender who fail to understand that good marketing is part and parcel of politics.Let me guess, Zille defender must be a middle aged white man who hails nearby Table Mountain. Your Godzille missed the issue and went off at a tangent and attacked Zuma.
I feel pity for those who wasted their time and voted for Godzille the MORON.The moron is taking us backwards not forward.
The Western Cape is part of South Africa, you Mogoe!!!! Long live democracy!!!! Posted on 13 May 2009 19:15

Say sorry Helen-
I think that Helen Zille should apologise - not a good start Posted on 13 May 2009 19:06
Great article-
It was amazing to see how the media that once crucified Zuma consistently and aggressively suddenly had a different tune of praise and optimism during the inauguration.

It was so glaring. Zille needs to get over herself now and stop all this oral diarrhea. I am not a supported of Zuma but ppl have moved on from the old chapter before inauguration.

Zille move on and do your job! Posted on 13 May 2009 22:04
agree, and-
Chris, make sure you send this advice and article to Helen directly Posted on 14 May 2009 13:39
Drygin
Absolutely-
I couldn't agree more with you. She has lost the plot and it wont be long before we start seeing images of Zille, looking like a crazy white woman in Africa, not unlike the Hillary Clinton imagery that we all saw. Zille needs to take a couple of deep breaths, stop getting personal with our president and start doing her job and showing the country what she can do for us so by the next round we will have even more faith in her capabilities. Agreed - all these politicians should grow up and start doing what they were appointed to do! Posted on 14 May 2009 09:07

I agree, it does seem the poly-ticks is changing her, then again it could be...-
the botox seeping into her brain?

Whatever the case may be, Helen is doing more than you and me combined so I'll just keep quiet and leave you with Ralph Waldo Emerson - “Spartans, stoics, heroes, saints and gods use short and positive speech.” Posted on 14 May 2009 09:29
Wow someone is snuggling close to Jacob aren't they?!-
I think you've made your main reason for writing this article shine through...I have a strange feeling you'll be eating your words with garnish soon.. Posted on 14 May 2009 09:39

MAYBE SHE WAS FRONTING . . .-
. . . I certainly can’t trust anyone with a mouth like hers. It makes me think that she might be a wolf in sheep skin. She manipulated people into thinking that she could be the “savior” while in her deepest thoughts she had other plans. She really is a bad taste in the mouth, I feel sorry for her. She’s become a slave and a victim to herself and it’s a pity that so many SAs are just like her when they’re not around a certain group of people, at least she had the courage to voice out her weakness. Posted on 14 May 2009 10:36
i just don't get this society-
First we applaud her then attack her. first we attack zuma now we defend him? What she said is true - she is being attacked for having no women on her cabinet. All she said was that the guy who has such clear disregard for women that he would sleep with an HIVpositive woman and not give a sparing thought for his THREE wives is hardly one to comment on women's rights.! I for one am glad Zille has the balls to speak out. Just because Malema threatens violence and Zuma is president doesn't mean we all have to lay down and lick their butts!!!!! Loosing the plot-
You've lost the plot completely. Zuma has never - not once - attacked Zille personally. Never. He has always minded his own business and perhaps it's time Zille did the same and get on with the job of governing.
Zille is renowned for ducking issues by always referring to the ANC, even when unnecessary. She was simply asked about her cabinet composition and, instead of offering an intelligent response, she went completely off the rails and attached Zuma. She has unwittingly become a moron herself by always arguing with the ANCYL. Why can't she just ignore them and retain her reputation? She is gradually stooping low. Posted on 14 May 2009 11:27

Zillerious-
Chris, it doesn't get better than this hey! Zille seems to represent the old-guard vanguards that wanted to keep the Cape to themselves..Her brand has been bruised badly. She needs help.

Only if she had a woman in her cabinet, she'll would probably bring back the 'six sense' appeal.

A friend called me and said, huh, it really zillerious.

Malema 3-Zille 0-
Malema has certainly been doing his job well in this rattling Zille saga. He has single handledly(of course she also unwittingly helped somehow)made Zille look so bad by constantly bringing her down to his level of gutter politics. She has stupidly been entertaining him instead of just having a laugh at him like the rest of SA does but no she has to open her mouth to respond to his foolery. And each time she comes out looking and sounding like a crazy witch and he just keeps on smiling(ever noticed how jovial he always is whilst spouting the most outrageous rhetoric) because he's done the job which he consistently reminds us of, that of being a rabble rouser and putting fear in those that stand in Zuma's or ANC's way. Like him or not that is what he does best and me thinks he's been tasked with this job from the ANC, of course no-one within the ANC NEC will ever admit to it publicly. Posted on 14 May 2009 13:14

They turned her into a puppet. Posted on 14 May 2009 13:32
Dread
She is twisted-
Helen Zille has finally shown her supporters what an immature poiltician she really is. By succumbing to insult a head of state unprovoked, she has consigned the coloured people in the Western Cape, who voted for her enmasse, to the scrap yard of this country's modern history. She's a twit, an embecile and above all a one track-minded idiot.

She must just answer the questions being put to her about her all-male cabinet, instead of looking for scapegoats. What has Zuma got to do with the composition of her lilly-white cabinet?

As for the language she uses, even Cape Town's famed homeless louts wouldn't sink so low. Coloured folks, you wasted your precious votes on this myopic little premier. Think again! Posted on 14 May 2009 13:56
I think that's enough . . .-
. . . yes she said wrong things but please let’s not add on more verbal abuse. She's an older woman, probably older than all you making comments. Let’s just keep it clean and respectful. Yes she has disrespected the President but that does not mean we have to sing her song. Even the President himself won’t sing it. Posted on 14 May 2009 14:08

STO ZUMA? Is that it?-
all over the place the majority of posters that you saw of the DA's campaign had this red strip across "STOP ZUMA"...i just had to ask " is that is? is that what you are offering to the country?" to stop Zuma? what about Education, Skills, Developments, Combating Crime, our Economy, the list is endless. "STOP ZUMA" and that's when I realised that she has lost the plot and that she should not be allowed to be anywhere near being in power in this country because she will use her power to...wait for it..."STOP ZUMA". I think, someone must give her an alarm clock so that she can wake up and realize that Zuma is the President and she has not stopped him! - Everyone else has accepted the reality, maybe she should too. CHILL
Can everyone please CHILL?-
Can we please have some calm, rational analysis? Why can't each case just be judged on its merits? Why this cult-like stuff when we're all supposedly rational beings? We all know that Zuma has said some silly things in the past. I'm not a fan - but not everything he says and does is rubbish. Zille had a good campaign but is not a god and is not untouchable. Her WC Cabinet was a big mistake and so was attacking Zuma. I am surpised and disappointed by her not walking the talk. I am also surprised that Zuma has remained quiet and, come to think of it, has been very dignified - a far cry from what many of use would expect given the pre-election caricature of him in the media. Maybe we're all in for a suprise. Posted on 14 May 2009 14:15

Some correction; Chris...........-
Zille was not provoked by the ANCYL. She brought the whole thing to herself by trying to avoid a legitimate question on the make up of her Cabinet. The ANCYL's unwarranted, silly, disrespectful and rude comments to her was a response to her attack of Mr. Zuma. Please let's not distort the sequence of events.

khathaZille is perhaps taking strain. As a leader of the DA and Premier; she had to accommodate all the white males who form the top echelons of the DA. If she were to appoint more women and blacks/coloureds in her Cabinet; someone would have had to give up his position. Perhaps she was unable to convince them and was thus under pressure on how to balance things out. Rememberr; she might be the DA leader but there are other powerful people behind her. That's politics; and it's tough.

This just demonstrates how astute a politician Zuma is (with his STD 3?). He has managed to appoint a Cabinet that is fairly balanced (both racially & gender wise); 4 women Premiers, etc.; and there has been few rumblings. As a political leader; especially if your party is in power; you need to be firm; have the ability to persuade your colleagues without alinieating them and still appease the broader community. Tough act!

khathaZille need to learn that running a Province and being in Opposition (shouting at the sides) are TOTALLY different things. Getting personal on JZ has put people off(potential future DA supporters, especially black people).

If the DA has any chance of increasing its support in 2011 and 2014; Zille needs to stop unnccessary personal attacks on JZ and focus on what she has to do. The country knows all JZ's sheninagans and reminding us of his mistakes does not get the country anywhere. We've all made mistakes in our pasts, and have skeletons in our cupboards and no one wants to be reminded all the time of past mistakes due to bad judgement at that time ; especially if you have apologised.

Nando's "KhataZille" TVC coming at a screen nearn you-
I think the KhataZille saga is hilarious, for the most part politicians are by their very nature egotistical, self serving and pompous beings. So I love it when the likes of Nando’s cut them to size...ala Julius "foot in the mouth" Malema TVC. Please Sly give us a KhathaZille TVC...she's given your agency enough material and sound bites to work with, even Zapiro has jumped onto the Zille "crazy woman" charicature bandwagon...LOL Posted on 14 May 2009 14:58

Rebranding of Zille-
This is quite endemic of human dynamism's. Immediately when one attains some form of power we seem to be obsessed and become disorientated, furthermore concentrate on showcasing our temporal power. Especially if you are in politics.

She has made a terrible blunder by contaminating or disengaging her brand from her market and possible future markets (her followers). But as we are South Africans, we are very much aware that it took everything of her fiber to be where she is today and she in-fact got obsessed of being a righteous judge for opposition parties such as the ANC and COPE - and I really wonder how is COPE COPING with this issue.

Nevertheless, lets see if she really has what it takes not only to rebrand herself but to take her brand to new heights under such daunting circumstances. Posted on 14 May 2009 15:03

Let's just be adult about this-
Helen, remember this: "empty vessels make the most noise". And right now you and Julius are at the same pitch...

Start acting like the grown woman you are and leave the primary school playground fights to the kids; you had your turn as a six-year-old! Ditto for Julius and his party colleagues.

Must say, Jacob is redeeming himself by keeping his comments strictly professional and not allowing himself to be dragged into the mess.

Good one Jacob, you are repairing the damage! Posted on 14 May 2009 16:04

You have lost my vote Zille! How frikken sad!-
Wow Zille, you have lost my vote next time round and all males?? You saying there are no fit woman in your council? I am male but wow how strategically stupid of you, as Chris implies you have lost it when here I thought we had a winner! Posted on 15 May 2009 13:29
DISTORTED/INSENSITIVE/DISORIENTATED MADAM OF WESTERN CAPE-
Ms Zille has stooped down to the lowest standard ever. The elections are done Ms ZILLE get a life and focus on the Western Cape Community, they need you to deliver for their needs as they have placed their trust in you. Forget about our President MADAM. STOP BEING CHILDISH AND ACT LIKE A GROWN UP WOMAN. Posted on 15 May 2009 16:53

Zille gone off track!-
This is a brilliant take on what Brand Zille has become, Chris! There seem to be too much anger and hatred driving Helen Zille; this combined with her party's electoral victory in the Western Cape seems to be making her forget that political thrones never remain stable forever. The once appealing Brand Zille has now become a nuisance in its communications. Zille has to start focussing on service delivery and move away from poking her dirty middle finger in the face of the President of South African. She'll be the first one to cry foul if her angered opponents refuse to collaborate with her in matters requiring such collaboration. Posted on 16 May 2009 09:16

The brand goes with the name-
Chris you may have already answered the question-the ANCYL plan seems to have worked. Shooting from the hip and focusing on your opponents has its dangers and it seems the lady has fallen into a trap. Given that perceptions are everything in this political "pr" game, this must be a round Ms Zille has lost-from a pr viewpoint. When you read the full text of her letter that fuelled the fire, it was principle based, concerning the ANC's gender record at leadership level. Unfortunately that has been lost in the slanging match. Helen herself says the media has equated her comments to those of her opponents. With her Zuma comments she certainly didn't hold anything back, so what else could one expect? Would a more muted response have been better? In her words this is not a game for sissies.Maybe she needed to be candid, instead of falling into line with President Zuma's supplications and posturing.
What about the old adage "no publicity is bad publicity"? I'm not sure if it's working here. One thing is for sure-this lady has the courage of her convictions. One remembers another Helen -Helen Suzman- standing up to BJ Vorster and the whole of parliament. It seems to go with the name. One wonders-would Helen of Troy be pleased with the 2009 image of the Helen brand? Posted on 18 May 2009 20:48

False Campaign to CPT's Detriment-
Zille utilized Obama's campaign music, his logo design, his volunteer structure, she even went on Twitter. And it swept the Western Cape around her, however, it has hoodwinked all of us. We wanted someone with positivity, humility and NO ego. What we got was the complete antithesis of that figure - a wild, arrogant, out-of-control, power hungry individual looking to satisfy her own selfish arguments. What a disappointment. She is going to create more trouble than good for us. Posted on 19 May 2009 09:17

CHEAP SHOT THOUGH-
Her attack looked so cheap because Zuma wasn't doing the attacking. Secondly she fell into the ANC trap of being made to look like an adult squabbling with kids (note how the battle is being fought by the ANCYL). This woman doesn't know when to stop. She had a chance to tell us what she would do for the nation & she spent all her energy telling us what Zuma would rather do. Posted on 20 May 2009 16:52
