New publication for small, emerging contractors

The first issue of Small Builder (August/September 2010), a new publication for small and emerging contractors, has been published by Publishing Room. The publication is a guide on how to manage and operate a small and mid-sized construction company.

It aims to empower readers with information that is useful to their daily business activities such as developing and drafting a contract, understanding the home builder interest, green building, financing a project, tendering etc.

Director of Publishing Room and editor of the magazine, Thembelani Tukwayo, commented, "In recent months poor workmanship and unfinished projects by small and emerging construction companies have put them into the media spotlight. This is mainly due to problems including poor management of cash flow or just sheer technical ineptitude to carry out projects awarded to them by government. Our publication hopes to be a real information and knowledge partner to the small builder."

Construction activity has grown tremendously in South Africa during the past 15 years and this has produced a number of small construction companies, building RDP houses, roads, water infrastructure, building alterations and electricity infrastructure. Many township and rural houses are extending, creating a major business activity for small homebuilders - sometimes referred to as bakkie builders.

The publication will be produced as an alternate monthly in an A4 format, with up to 32 pages depending on advertising. Copies of the publication will be mailed to a qualifying audience who are doing work with government and building material retailers such as Cashbuild will be used as distribution channels. Contracts with the editorial team are in the process of being finalised.
