It's not only about the here and now. The Loerie Awards salutes both the past and care for the future, as two recent announcements show.

To preserve the environment, the awards' web hosting partner Hetzner, announced this week that it bought 260 trees as part of its contribution to creating green Loeries. The trees were distributed to and planted by the residents of the new settlement of Delft, an underprivileged community where the surroundings benefit most from the aesthetics of foliage.

According to Hetzner MD Hans Wencke, the intention is to create a carbon neutral event in partnership with the organisers. “This is about taking responsibility for our environment and our city, by giving a little to ensure that our natural home is preserved for future generations,” he says.

In a retrospective mood, the Labia Theatre in Cape Town will screen the 2008 Loerie winners 18 - 26 September 2009 to get the public into the creative flow and then screen the 2009 winners on Sunday 27 September, the day after the awards, until 1 October. Admission is free.

“The public are the ultimate consumers of advertising and we would like to expose them to the best of what the industry has to offer and the ideas that brands are communicating,” says Andrew Human, Loeries CEO.
