Zoom advertising helps turn tourism green

6 Oct 2008 11:243 commentsBizLike
As the first advertising agency in South Africa to become carbon neutral when it planted hundreds of trees to offset its own carbon impact, Zoom Advertising has now embarked on a campaign that will turn the local tourism industry green. The initiative is called ‘My tree in Africa' and gives travellers the opportunity to make a valid contribution to help the environment.
The brainchild of Zoom's creative director, Deon Robbertze, the initiative is simple to grasp, simple to implement. Every R80 collected will pay for the planting of a tree in Africa and Zoom will partner with Food and Trees for Africa, www.trees.co.za, to plant the trees in disadvantaged communities. “Through this”, Robbertze explains, “travellers will be invited to pay a small amount extra on their tickets to offset the impact of their travel.

“SA Tourism recently stated that we need to do something about the carbon footprint overseas visitors make when they visit our country. ‘My tree in Africa' is a solution. With 2010 looming, we need to promote South Africa as environmentally responsible, because many of these visitors will be green-aware.”

So far, Zoom has already signed up Giltedge. Giltedge had been investigating options to link with a suitable environmental programme and jumped at the chance to get on board with the ‘My tree in Africa' campaign. Giltedge is now presenting the concept to all its business partners, agents and associates throughout the world and is issuing a newsletter to its regular customers to sign them up to the idea and get the green ball rolling.

Gaining momentum by the day, Zoom has just signed up Travel Smart, www.travel-smart.co.za to the ‘My Tree in Africa' campaign. Travel Smart - which is a group of companies, of which Giltedge Travel is one member - has gone one step further and stated it will also make its own organisation carbon neutral.

Zoom is also busy talking to government and more major tourism organisations about joining the ‘My Tree in Africa' campaign so that the South African tourism industry can be united in one effort to offset its negative impacts on the global environment.

Zoom's managing director, Steve Massey adds: “Zoom promotes sustainable marketing because, in the future, more and more consumers will only buy brands that act responsibly in the environment, socially and economically. We are urging our clients and associates to think green, to be responsible and to take the lead with campaigns such as the ‘My Tree in Africa' initiative so that we can bring about effective change and make a positive difference.”

Zoom has also been invited to handle all the marketing and be the lead agency for the 2009 Green Marketing Conference.

Not carbon neutral-
I hate to be the science prat (no I don't), but trees are inherently carbon neutral (turn Carbon Dioxide into Oxygen during the day, and then visa versa at night). So while planting trees is all green and good, it does nothing for your carbon footprint.

Good start-
This is a good place to start, but unfortunately it is far too simplistic to work effectively. The planting of trees is only helpful in reducing carbon emissions depending on WHERE in the world they are planted. If trees are planted in the wrong place, for example, this can actually accelerate climate change. Secondly, 'carbon offsets' are never going to be the most effective way to cut emissions. Cutting emissions is something that needs to be done in various ways, such as investing in cleaner energy, teaching communities to be environmentally responsible and curbing the use of extraneous packaging for everyday items (refills, anyone?). I would also suggest that the company do more to teach their travelers about carbon emissions, as I believe many will see planting a nice little tree in Africa as a free pass to be ecologically unconscious for the rest of their trip. As a side note, the Design Indaba could CERTAINLY wake up about this issue. Planting some trees in Africa does NOTHING to offset the amount of flights delegates take, and frankly the amount of spot varnished high gloss brochures stuffed into the freebies bag is SHAMEFUL. Get it together design indaba!!! Posted on 6 Oct 2008 19:02

This is the start-
It is a known fact that planting trees does make a difference and that it is better than doing nothing. My Tree in Africa will also offer offsets via Solar cookers and Solar panels which will be distributed in rural communities by mid year 2009. Posted on 7 Oct 2008 10:18
