Nominations and commendationsWe have an eclectic mix of movie reviews by Daniel Dercksen and Eugene Yiga; from silent movie masterpieces to demonic possession thrillers, both Dercksen and Yiga let us know for which films we should and shouldn't be buying popcorn. In music news, Sindy Peters interviews Jason Cederwall, organiser of the beautifully executed 5 Gum Two Door Cinema Club event; Justin Williams interviews local glitch hop duo Jam Jarr, and I get the low-down on Durban pop band Fire Through The Window. Daniel Dercksen and Debbie Hathway take a look at things theatrical; Dercksen falls in love with the Coward and Cole cabaret at the Kalk Bay Theatre, while Hathway is blown away by the talent at the Cape Town International Ballet Competition in the Mother City. Our motoring editor Henrie Geyser reviews the new Captiva, and discusses how to be a better driver, while travel editor Brian Berkman takes a creative wine safari, and Theresa Szejwallo enjoys a 10-day Imperial Europe tour. Lastly, congratulations to all the SAMA 18 nominees announced late last week. Best of luck to you all! Ruth Cooper, production manager

[Eugene Yiga] Everybody loves an underdog. The Artist, a black-and-white silent movie with a budget of only USD15 million and filmed in just five weeks, is as big an underdog as they come. So, does it deserve all the fuss? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! Read more >>
Music
[Sindy Peters] Staring out the window of a double-decker bus, we drove along the streets of Nyanga/Philipi, a bus-load of middle-class Capetonians eager to get a gander at the secret venue. We could have peeped at our Twitter feeds to see what the early birds were saying, but the surprise turned out to be well worth the wait: Two Door Cinema Club was to entertain us at a rundown industrial site on the skirts of a township.
