When an establishment calls its rooms boudoirs, you know it hides something a little sassy beneath its sophisticated veneer that deserves exploring. So the Franschhoek Boutique Hotel ticked that box for my slightly offbeat take on the world.

Fortunately, my line of work allows me to dine and drink at some of our best local offerings (no complaints here); however last Friday was the first time that I was lucky enough to experience the amazing Babel at Babylonstoren in Paarl. After hearing many tales of happy bellies after a Babel visit my expectations were suitably high - and I am pleased to say my expectations were met, and then some, after sampling the current winter menu. In fact, eating at Babel had me wishing that all restaurants served food this way: from farm to table with minimal chopping and cooking, just quality, seasonal and fresh produce uniquely and artfully presented and paired.

I have to say that Paarl hasn't really registered on my list of places to explore, besides a trip to the beautiful Laborie Wine Farm last year. It's usually been a town that I just drive through. However this is a shame as Paarl has much to offer (even in winter) as I recently experienced.
