Something else freelancers should know: you are only as good as your last assignment - so make sure you give 110% to EVERY assignment you do. There are so many freelancers out there chasing assignments that if you mess up, finding a replacement is not a great problem.

Secondly, unless you can give everything to a particular assignment, rather decline it, making it clear that you are doing so simply because you cannot give it your best, due to prior commitments or whatever.

I would be far more inclined to go back to a freelancer in such a case, than if he or she had accepted an assignment and then been unable to produce the goods.

Even though this survey was limited to three sectors, much of it applies across all sectors - including advertising, marketing, media and what-have-you.

All start-ups will face the same challenges to a greater or lesser degree... onerous labour laws, red tape, high costs for electricity and internet connection, the difficulty in finding - and keeping - people with the necessary skills to drive the company's growth...

I have worked before in a virtual office - myself in CT, and with my fellow management in Nairobi, London and Boston. It worked, but yes - one needs a lot of self-discipline to make it work. And our set-up really did work.

As Edward says, one needs self-motivation and self-discipline, and as Nathan says, make sure you have all your ducks in a row upfront, but when those are all in order, it is a great way to work.
