What would it be like if the world was covered in ice and we skated around without car troubles or traffic jams? Well, until climate change takes inspiration from Michael Bay, we'll have to leave that question to our imaginations. And nowhere is it more wonderfully imagined than in The Nutcracker On Ice, showing at the Artscape, Cape Town until 12 February, 2012, after playing to sold-out audiences in Joburg last year.

The word "disturbing" doesn't even being to describe The Skin I Live In, a new movie by Pedro Almodóvar. While the legendary Spanish director has been known to push cinematic boundaries (previous works like Bad Education and Volver come to mind), his latest creation is something else entirely. Enter at your own risk.

Some serious Googling the day before and then a quick read of the programme notes just before "curtain-up" (not that there is a curtain, but you know what I mean) were essential prerequisites for my being able to follow the riotous twists and turns of William Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors, this summer season's offering at the Maynardville open-air theatre.

2012 seems to be off to a great start with loads of promised fun for the rest of the summer season. Yes, don't deny it; summer isn't over until we are pulling out those scarfs.

Excellent news for all chronic FOMO-sufferers: there will be no need to run around between stages at the 2012 Up The Creek together with Bacardi festival. The organisers have once again decided to do away with the conventional anxiety-inducing multiple stage festival lineup in favour of a single-file approach that allows revellers to enjoy one performance without fear of losing out on another. Joy!

I have the idea that whenever people of different ages, races and genders gather in a certain space, and ABBA's songs start playing, you will have a party. I am yet to be proven wrong.

Art and music collided in Woodstock recently at We Are Beautiful Losers #2, hosted at /A Word of Art in Woodstock. Derelict Woodstock is still coined as "up and coming"; I'd like to think she's just about ready to be crowned a fully fledged member of the Cape Town creativity club; well, that's if Ricky-Lee Gordon, aka Freddy Sam, has anything to do with it.

Punk arises in times of strife, when the status quo needs a serious kick in the crotch and a spit in the face; not surprising then that there was a small, but dedicated, group of punk rockers playing in southern Africa at the height of the apartheid madness in the 70s and 80s. Daring life and "freedom" to question and protest the unjust system.

Waiting sucks, but waiting in queues tends to suck even more. In fact, queues apparently suck so much that actual scientific studies have been done to determine just how badly it sucks, exactly why it sucks and which variables have an impact of the level of suckishness experienced in any given queue. I kid you not, check it out here.

I imagine being a ventriloquist takes hard work, dedication, a creative imagination, and some deep-seated psychosis. Conrad Koch's trio of puppets - Chester Missing, Hillary and Ronnie - are all indeed a little left of centre, reflecting a bit of madness in the puppeteer himself, which is fine as his comedic method is in his madness!

So, according to a whole bunch of learned folks who have done a fair amount of study into the science of floating, this is what happens when a human being floats in water: muscle soreness and tension is relieved, lactic acid dissolved, the excretion of cortisol (the anxiety hormone) repressed and a nice healthy dose of endorphins released into the bloodstream.

"We are the 99 percent!" So screamed many a protester who "occupied" the world. Clearly, there's still a lot of anger following the 2008 financial crash. That probably explains why Inside Job won last year's Oscar for the best documentary (despite coming across as a manipulative vendetta a few too many times). But what about the other side? What do the bankers think and feel? And what was going through their minds while the mess was going on? Margin Call is here to answer these questions.
