Russian hackers target M&G Online, site taken down

The Mail & Guardian Online, one of South Africa's premier online sources of news and opinion, has been taken offline today, Wednesday, 26 January 2011, after an attack by Russian hackers in a phishing attack that has been building for several weeks.

Nic Dawes, Mail & Guardian editor tweeted "The M&G website is under sustained attack by hackers. We've taken it offline to protect the security of users. Many apologies."

The principal threat from the hackers seems to be scams and malware which rely on access to user information.
