Best and worst Father's Day gifts

Following a poll of over 900 customers, Pick n Pay has pinpointed the 'most wanted' gifts for Dad on Father's Day. Some of the best gifts mentioned included 'a big hug', biltong, aftershave, a cellphone, tickets to a music concert, golf clubs, an iPad and even a brand new car or an heir.

    Other best gifts

    • A watch

    • A surprise visit from a son overseas

    • A bottle of good wine

    • A weekend away

    • A homemade card from my children who are just learning to write

    • A poem

    • A Springbok scarf

Many just wanted time with the family. Other items on Dads' wish lists were gas braais, power tools, whisky, peace and quiet, obedient children, an iPhone and repairs to the house.

    Worst gifts

Soap-on-a-rope took the title of the worst gift ever given for Father's Day. Other no go's were melted chocolates, T-shirts that don't fit and the highest possible offence: forgetting the day completely. Others to avoid include:

    • Alcohol - I don't drink

    • A pair of socks...again

    • Two pairs of socks

    • A tie...again

    • A mug

    • Underpants

    • Flowers...?!

    • Nose hair trimmer

    • A spade

    • Foot powder

    • 2L of coke

    • A toothbrush

The poll also asked shoppers what they would do if they only remembered Father's Day the day before. Most people said they would buy Dad a six-pack and some biltong, while another clear favourite was a hastily arranged braai with the family. In spite of this, the overwhelming majority (89%) of respondents believe that Father's Day is a great way to celebrate fatherhood.
