Breaking records Gangnam Style

How a portly, pony dancing Korean pop musician became as popular as sliced cheese is somewhat of a mystery to me. Luckily, new time contributor Lebogang Mukansi explains how this came to be and what branding lessons we can learn from the meteoric rise and all-encompassing reach of Gangnam Style.

Speaking of breaking records in pop culture, Breaking Dawn (Part 2) made history as the biggest box-office at cinemas for Friday and Saturday in South Africa ever. Far cry from a twi-hard, Daniel Derksen is relieved to review the fifth and final Twilight Saga instalment, while theatre film productions, L'Elisir d'Amore and The Last of the Haussmans get high praise from him.

In other stage news, Eugene Yiga reviews mind-bending mentalist Gilian Gork's production Beyond the Mind, and experiences many laugh out loud moments at Martin Evan's one man show FBPK.

Brian Berkman visits the fabulous Abalone Boutique Hotel in Paternoster, and Rod Baker continues his Mauritius holiday report-back with a review of authentic resort, La Pirogue.

Check our gallery of the recent album launch by The Plastics, as well as a few pics from the Traffic Clothing Summer Fashion Show.

New competitions this week include tickets for the first 2012 Old Mutual Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert featuring Daniel Bedingfield and tickets to see him at LIVE, the venue in Durban this Friday. We will be picking and announcing our lucky Synergy Live winners later this week so, if you haven't entered yet, do so now... #winning!

Motoring

The motor plan, salvation or hi-tech con?
[Roger Metcalfe] The motoring world has changed profoundly over the last 25 years. OK, I confess to being trained in the old school where I maintained my own cars and when necessary rebuilt engines and gearboxes and anything else that needed repair such as alternators, starter motors, windscreen wiper motors, CV joints, bearings etc. During these years I held the power in my hands! Travel

Abalone House, you'll hardly want to leave
[Brian Berkman: contributing editor, travel] With its white-washed houses and ubiquitous blue shutters, Paternoster fancies itself part of the Greek Isles. Don't hold this against this charming West Coast seaside village as it punches way about its weight in the restaurants worth eating at and interesting shops at which to spend your money stakes. Sail into the sunset at La Pirogue
[Rod Baker] La Pirogue, named for the traditional Mauritian twin-sailed fishing boat, bills itself as the most authentic Mauritian resort. Its individual chalets are also modelled on the traditional Mauritian thatched house. What it also has is seemingly acres of rolling lawns, and the tranquillity of a Trappist monastery. Read more >>

Breaking a yawn!
[Daniel Dercksen] If there's one highlight on the big screen this year (and a sigh of relief), it's that the never-ending Twilight saga comes to final conclusion with the lifeless and dull The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part 2). What started out as an amusing saga fizzles into thin air. Read more >>

Opera and live theatre on big screen
[Daniel Dercksen] Cinema-goers are in for a super-special treat this weekend with an exclusive screening of two magnificent must-see stage productions that were filmed live: The Metropolitan Opera's sumptuous production of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore and The National Theatre's outstanding The Last of The Hausmans. Why Gangnam Style is the biggest news, brand story of 2012
[Lebogang Mukansi] Through his recent success, 34-year-old, Korean K-pop superstar Psy, has had the president of the United States joke about being able to do his silly horse dance, got him photographed with Ban Ki-moon, and featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, teaching Britney Spears and mums across America his Gangnam Style dance. Lots of LOLs in FBPK
[Eugene Yiga] Comedian Martin Evans, recently seen on Comedy Central and the South African edition of Come Dine With Me, gets up close and personal in FBPK. If you want to know why his new one-man show won a Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival (or what FBPK stands for in the first place), it's now on at Cape Town's Kalk Bay Theatre. Go Beyond the Mind with Gilan Gork
[Eugene Yiga] It all started with a magic kit at the age of five. Because Gilan Gork's parents owned an educational toy centre and supported his passion by bringing home enormous magic sets from international toy fairs, it wasn't long before he began performing at charity events and professional gigs. Now, after a lifetime mastering his craft, Beyond the Mind demonstrates his ability to read minds, bend spoons, and a whole lot more. Read more >>
