Keep that flag flying!

Draftfcb has launched a national campaign, complete with an icon to be used anywhere and everywhere you can think of, to encourage South Africa to keep its "gees" up once the 2010 FIFA World Cup ends - let's keep our flags flying for another 30 days! Who can believe that after years of counting down, it's now the last week of the world cup (and the last week of Jeremy Mansfield on the Rude Awakening)? But that doesn't mean that our role as hosts has ended. Over the weekend, I stumbled across this FIFA 2010 South Africa World Cup Photographer Blog and I was shocked to discover that some of our world-famous friendliness and hospitality had vanished once our African teams had been knocked out. This is definitely not ayoba. Ayoba is the way fans gathered at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg yesterday, Sunday, 4 July2010, to bid farewell and thank you to the Black Stars of Ghana. [Oh, and Matthew Ashton's blog is well worth reading to see what goes into taking all those amazing photographs used by the media.] So what else is happening currently? In Grahamstown, the 14th annual Highway Africa, the second annual World Journalism Education Congress and the fifth Digital Citizen Indaba all take place this week. This is the biggest gathering of journalists on the African content annually and Bizcommunity.com congratulates the winners of the Telkom Highway Africa New Media Awards. Keep flying, Mzansi, keep flying =============<() PWAAAAAARP Simone Puterman (@SimoneBiz) Managing editor PS The more things change, the more things don't stay the same. More and more, media professionals are moving into the digital radio and TV space (Richard Hardiman off to 2oceansviberadio and Juanita Williams to leave IOL for Zoopy), and finally, there's a new advertising agency business model in South Africa (Herman Manson finds out more about 60 layers of smart).
