#BizTrends2018: To survive, marketing must kill its darlings in 2018
#BizTrends2018: To survive, marketing must kill its darlings in 2018

When Stephen King said you must "Kill your darlings", he was not suggesting that one of his famous psychopathic characters must kill a loved one, but rather giving writing advice. Quoting William Faulkner, who said that, "In writing, you must kill your darlings", King advises that writers should never be too precious or become overly sentimental when it comes to their work - if it needs to be cut, it needs to be cut. And the same is true for the marketing industry.

#BizTrends2018: An augmented reality check

The large analyst houses do not have an enviable task making predictions given the monumental speed of change in the tech space. At the end of 2016, Gartner predicted that by 2020, 100 million consumers will be shopping in augmented reality. #BizTrends2018: Refocus on the business of advertising

For years we've been told that the future of advertising is the internet and data. So, we all followed the trend and jumped onto the super highway. From the days of dial-up to LTE and fibre, we have continuously raced ahead, finding new ways to create new waves. Today, streams of videos, interviews, content, shows, sounds, and apps, are brought to us by brand X.

#BizTrends2018: Identity crisis - the business of being WOKE
#BizTrends2018: Identity crisis - the business of being WOKE

In hindsight 2017 can be boiled down to one big laundry day: a lot of dirty laundry was exposed, aired, disinfected and ironed flat. In terms of trends, it's been a long time coming and 2018 is going to be the year brands and businesses are forced to go from 'woke', to being wide awake. There are tectonic plates of change grinding beneath our feet, and for those businesses which don't tread carefully, there's a very real risk of falling into the abyss of political incorrectness and obsolescence.
