Female radio personalities

It's time we celebrated skillful women broadcasters.
Most of the time when we discuss radio, it's mostly male presenter's names that get mentioned. In most cases when women DJs are ever given their due share of attention, it is to criticize them as if all of them are not good enough to be on the wireless.

Well, the truth is there are many excellent female radio broadcasters and they deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated. Lets change our way of thinking and give credit where its due.

here you go...got my analysis-
Penny has experience but her vocab is pathetic, her articulation forces one to tune out. If metro want to keep her, she should swap with Bambo Johnson for extra training; she doesn't deserve the lunchtime show.
Elana...stupor on air...an airhead. wonder why she's on radio?
Azania, broke into radio as a producer then a drive time show host. She only has a good voice...nothing much to her.
Why was Brenda Charuma axed, she has the most listners...probably it was for commercial purposes-she didn;t bring in the $$$ where Aza attracts tons of commercials and promotions.
Koula is well informed, eventhough i still miss the vivacious friendly Fox. She is not conforming to the new 5fm trend of going 'black', i listen to her for the rock!
Anele is kool...eventhough really talkative.
The VJ on Sundays late nite show on 5fm is pathetic...she needs to be removed!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Bongi Mbelu...needs more time on air, she's talented and kool...used to listen to her on UJFM too.
Erica Elle is hott...love her...but she shouldn't standin for Koula if she wants to talk about Bat Man for three hours!
Fresh Drive Newsreader Poppy who hosts the TRL live radio show on Saturday is creative and the ultra kool chic. I would want to handout with her any time. Digging her and the show.
Chrisitna Knight sucks!
Pity i cannot listen to Yfm and Highveld...they suck for me. Posted on 15 Aug 2008 12:56

Ceduma-
There is honesty on the idea that women radio personalities must be celebrated. The issue is that women try to emulate men instead of being women on radio. Ever since radio was established the midmorning slot was occupied by women. They have done wonderfull but are failing themselves on congratulating each other for the job well done. The ill concieved idea that prime slots are morning and afternoon shows is disturbing. Some listeners that belong to LSM 6 and above listen to radio early evening. That is why you have all business and successfull talkshows during this period. The marketers are really having their own agenda and are then followed blindly by programme managers. It is interesting that women, when are on their own play a particular genre of music, but women radio personalities play something different. Perhaps because programme managers and music compilers are men. Radio managers must ensure that, in the team of musici compilers, there are women. Perhaps all radio stations must engender all their activities. This means must ensure that women are involved in all activities. The most ridiculous current trend is to have women as copresenters in "primetime slots". This is just to ensure that women add soprano that adding content. It is really irritating. The best process is to have a 50/50 gender representation. DJs that rake more audience then should occupy primetime. Posted on 15 Aug 2008 13:24

Nice topic-
I think that since Penny got her midday slot she is very lazy. Her show is made up of back announcing and music - nothing more. I miss Thomas on that slot (another topic for another time). I don't know if it's because she's getting older or what, but there's something missing! It's like she's not hungry for this anymore!

Aza is doing great in her current slot. It fits her like a glove. She's bubbly and on top of her game.

Twasa on Lesedi is informative and good. Love her with Bathu!

Kg is perfect for Radio 2000 (but she's not really friendly in real life, I was quite dissapointed when I met her). I think this is where women entertainers fail!

Pabi sounds relaxed at Highveld it's as if she's come into her own. Love that and happy for her. No more proving a point! I'm fan of Pabi not Highveld!

Love Poppy from 5FM. She should be given a slot. She's vibey and exciting.

Nothemba is shining on the Jazz Show at Metro like she did when she was on SAFM.

Redi Direko is holding her own on 702. The girl is tough considering how negative the 702 listeners are most of the time. (Congrats for winning the Vodacom ...)

I love Nonn Botha because she sounds so soothing on radio. I just love her.

Rowena Baird is very confident and sounds very articulate. She's knows her stuff.

Masechaba wa bua bathong! That woman can talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk some more and talk.

To other female presenters I say ladies pick up your game. Sounding good is not enough we need more because you have more to offer -Give it! Posted on 15 Aug 2008 13:35

Male bashing-
I totally agree with Bonga, some female radio personalities are a plessure to listen to, Take Papi Moloi for instatnce, it's almost like she was born on radio, very fresh and free and then you find other personalities who find pleasure in bashing man everytime they open thier food holes...I don't want to mention names but they know themselves. Just a piece of advise"keep it Papi Moloi style. Posted on 15 Aug 2008 15:44

Girls On Da Mic-
Redi Direko - She's the queen of Talk radio, a legend in the making.

Thabiso - She has become a granny of SAFM, I swear she looks up to Jenny-Crwys. Loosen up girl, but I guess it's the environment.

Penny Lebyane - Another used-to-be, I blame it on her over-staying at Metro, they really sucked her dry.

Masechaba - Another example of why one should never 'own' a slot forever. She's good overall but she needs to expand & explore, she's a big girl now & must either go to 702 or SAFM and play with the big boys.

KG - She's legend, and has almost single-handedly (Wasup Just-Ice?) injected life back into Radio 2000.

Pabi - I agree, she's finally where she wanted to be, and is proving all who wanted to destroy her wrong. Big-ups gal.

Nonn Botha - My gosh, she's a gem, her voice, energy, laugh, & tell-tales...presentation is off-the-hook. She's going places. Well done to whoever brought her to Kaya Fm.

Elana - She tries too much to fit with the 'whites'. Tis okay girl, there are darkies at 5 now, calm down.

Anele - She's having a good time. Passion is written all over her, I will classify her as Great!

Koula - She was unlucky to have to 'fill' the big shoes of Nicole, but she hasn't disappointed thus far.

Chris Knight - Can somebody please swap her with Elana? She deserves better and also on 'The Rising' list along with Nonn.

Geez Yfm ladies, need a total radio make-over ek se.
There's a lady called Cleo Leshoro who was at Kaya Fm & moved to Yfm, wherever she is, somebody please tell her radio needs her, she is on the class of one Phendi G & Yfm could do with her, geez Y-Ladies are doing an injustice to the airwaves.
Unathi lost something when she left Yfm & it has never been the same for her.

As for the Venac crowd, I believe the heat is not that high there, competition is at times non-existent. Posted on 15 Aug 2008 15:44

Thanks Is-
I kept thinking what shall I say about Thabiso? and you summed it up very well. She does sound like ugranny Jenny-Crwys. Posted on 19 Aug 2008 07:35

Women need to be just that - women on radio-
Why do girls always try to out-talk their male counterparts on the mic? I think chicks should celebrate the radio space by bringning themselves out instead of tyring to invite men into their space. There are already a lot of women columnist who do enough of that in print.

On radio, let's have fun ladies that's what it's all about. And Penny, Elana, YFM presenters, try and think of what you're going to say BEFORE you open the mic, many a time you guys get lost in your trail of thoughts thus losing us (listeners) in the process. People don't think you guys are airheads, it's just that you paint yourselves as dimwits everytime you speak - EVERYTIME.

Big up to the sisters, there are plenty more coming up on Yebo Radio or so I hear.

Speaking of which, what's happening with that station?

Cool beans! Posted on 15 Aug 2008 23:04

Pabi-holding it down nicely-
I agree with everyone on Pabi- No need to prove yourself love- you have arrived.
She really knows her thing- I still think Nothemba has nothing when it comes to jazz... KG beats her fair and square-so I would have KG do the jazz show on metro.

Bertha Charuma was great!! period.. Penny go home and have that baby.
I miss Brenda Sisane though!
Y-fm girls- dead dead dead!!
Koula-big ups.
Motsweding FM- died when they left Minah Pilane go and hired that Sibongile(xhosa) for a tswana radio. Posted on 18 Aug 2008 13:12

pabi pabi pabi-
I agree that Pabi rocks, she seriously found a home in highveld. the other ladies who really rock is Poppy and Cathrine from 5fm. I must say I was once Penny's fan but now Iam even ashamed to admit it. The sista must just resign, period! The less said about Yfm the better, I think they need people like Phindi G and Cleo. I like Anele-
I am listening to her right now and man is she witty and bloody smart about her humor. Not easy in a white male dominated 5fm and she has not sold out to please the while audience . Go girl . Posted on 25 Aug 2008 13:11
Freeedom of speech-
I'm all for freedom of speech as long as it is used in a respectful manner. Some of the comments made on this forum are rude and tacky and very much personal instead of being valid and constructive. The sad part is that most of them are coming from women and directed to women. Damn its women's month and this is how you people celebrate it? I'm not well versed in radio but i think some of the comments are really not about credible radio, they are just about people's personality. Reading btw the lines one sense hatred from some people. HATE is such an ugly thing, and mostly reflects the state of mentality of an individual.
Talking about female radio jocks - i think half of them are brilliant and some of the show's they host are not half bad.
Metro - Penny's experience speaks for itself. Her show is well formated and has educational features that are great. She tried to educate some of you with her my continent features way before the "xenophobic attacks". She started the phoenix woman segment before most other dj's started copying it, KG from Radio 2000, T-Bose from Khaya, even her colleague Thomas is doing it now. Oh her Ultimate men features are always great because we get to hear about the wonderful work done by men of south africa instead of the old mentality that all men are pigs and rapists. Her show is lifestyle entertainment themed.I agree with some of you Pabi is good for her slot. I can't comment much about the YFM ladies because i'm not in the age group that YFM caters for, hence i don't listen to the station. 5FM's target market is also not directed to me. Unathi and Azania from Metro are also not bad. Azania's show does need some creativity thought, but i see that she's really trying to be funky and entertaining (Big-ups to her). Unathi makes a killer combo with Glen. So instead of hating the personality - please speak critical about the content they deliver, then you'll have a case. Posted on 25 Aug 2008 14:12

Can it-
Why is there always that ONE person who has to come in and rail against everyone else for having an opinion? Here's a hint, you talk about us moaning about these people's personality - that is what radio is about. They have to sell their personalities, otherwise what's the point. Might as well just have back to back songs.

In my opinion DJ Fresh is the epitome of what a radio personality should be, now if we could just get a female version. Smart, funny, sweet and entertaining. Oh ... and doesnt take herself too seriously. Posted on 29 Aug 2008 09:00

Ladies giving us good radio-
KG - Super- the KGB, Breakfast on P4, Her Jazz shows - totally phenomenal, although I think she needs to give more effort to her current Radio 2000 show.

Bertha - Really, really amazing. Happy she's back on the airwaves.

Pabi - She's in a league of her own!

Vicky - Knowledgeble, interesting, matured and funny. Keep it up Mam' Vicky!!

Masechaba - Have to listen to her show before I go to bed. She is so passionate about what she does! Thumbs up!!!

Thandolwethu - I can never forget how exciting her breakfast show was on P4. She needs to work harder to regain that spark.

Koula - She handles the Sunday chart show very, very well. Super.

Lady D (Dudu Khoza) - Grown and talented. The up and coming personalities should listen and learn.

Nonn Botha - Calm and interesting, she's going places.

Dre - She needs to return to radio. She must.

Carol - Young, talented and simply awesome. She does night time radio so well.

Ethel - where did she go? Her Saturday show was really enjoyable. Posted on 21 Nov 2008 23:19
