Daily Sun’s audited circulation soars again

The audited circulation of South Africa's biggest daily tabloid newspaper, the Daily Sun, soared by a whopping 20 percent to reach 283 738 sales per day between January and March this year, as the first quarter of 2004 Audit Bureau of Circulations figures indicates.

During the same period, the circulation of Sowetan fell by nearly 3 percent, to 120 225 sales a day. Other daily newspapers such as The Star, The Citizen, and Business Day in Johannesburg, and major newspapers in Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London reported "no decline" in their circulations to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Newspapers are compelled to report a decline if their circulations fall by 5000 copies or 5 percent.

"These figures are a massive vindication of all the effort we are putting into the quality of Daily Sun," said publisher Deon du Plessis. "We are far and away the biggest daily newspaper in the country. We sell 163 513 copies a day more than Sowetan. We sell 117 000 copies a day more than The Star. Daily Sun is the only truly national daily newspaper in South Africa.

He added: "To have achieved all of this before we are even two years old is a phenomenon. Daily Sun dominates sales in every LSM group. We are giving readers the news packaged exactly as they want it and advertisers are benefiting from the soaring circulation and readership.

"We are proud of our achievement, and humbled by the support of our readers and advertisers," Du Plessis said.
